11th Grade Service Contract

Page history last edited by jdonnelly 10 years, 6 months ago

By their junior year, Woodlawn students have had the opportunity to be involved in many different types of service experiences.  They now get to choose a particular issue or cause to support during the course of the third trimester.  Their goal is to take an active role in the community to serve and to encourage others to do so as well. Some students serve as mentors to other classes in their service learning projects.

 .

Projects

All students will be required to complete one long-term project during the third trimester, as well as provide updates for the class blog with supplemental materials related to your project.

Additionally, all students will be required to complete 3 hours of on-campus service, by TBD.

The topic for the trimester project is up to the student, provided it has been discussed and approved by the grade 11 Service Advisor.  Also up to the student will be the medium and/or method through which the issue will be addressed.

  • Is there an event or activity you can plan to raise awareness and inspire others to action on behalf of your issue? Perhaps your passion is filmmaking, painting, photography, or journalism.
  • How can you incorporate those skills into your project?

The key is to determine how you as an individual or team can best express your ideas, and how you can use your talents to draw attention to an issue about which you feel passionate. Again, each project should be discussed with your advisors before moving too far into the planning stages.

Evaluation

Each student will be evaluated on the following:

1.     Preparation for action:

    • Class participation
    • Development of an appropriate plan

2.     Taking action:

    • Designing one project, any format (approval needed), serving as a call to action on a local, state, and national issue.

Grades will be determined by the student’s development of the long-term project, creativity, initiative in raising awareness, and recording of      project/actions

    • Students are permitted to work in groups of two

3.     Call to action:

    • Project presentation
    • Process paper

4.   The extra mile: Assisting a classmate with his/her project is one way to demonstrate that you have an exemplary understanding of what service really means at Woodlawn.
