Welcome to First Grade!

Ms. Tracy Hoskins & Ms. Glynis Lefler

1st Grade Class Pages gives you a look at several of the curriculum components our class will be covering in the core subjects for the upcoming week.  Please note: This is not a comprehensive list of material covered due to the nature of elementary education.  Each new day brings about many valuable opportunities for teachable moments because young children are naturally filled with curiosity.  Use the information presented here to help guide discussion with your child.  Please be sure to check out what our enrichment teachers are doing with our first grade class, too!  Their plans are listed below.

Homework:

  •  READ DAILY.  It's the #1 way to improve your child's reading abilities!  Reading to your child is so important.  It allows him/her to hear the fluency in your voice...not to mention it's fun to hear a story!  The library book that your child picks out may be above, below, or on his/her reading level.  These books are not meant to be instructional reading books at home.  The purpose of your child choosing a library book is to ensure that you have something new to read at home each day.   Audio books are a great way for your child to hear a fluent reader...and it counts as daily reading too!

  • Practice spelling your words for the week in various ways.  The more senses you use the better the information will be retained.

  • Homework sheets are given throughout the week as necessary.  They are due the next day.  These sheets are meant to provide review of skills learned as well as get your child in the routine of doing homework.  Assignments typically do not take longer than 20 min.  Please have your child focus on the quality of his/her work.
