Monday - Personal Information Survey
- Six levels of moral development (complete graphic organizer)
-Procedures:  Entering the classroom,turning in work, exiting the classroom, voice procedure

Read Ms. Ruble's FAQs online and be prepared to go over them tomorrow in class.

 

Tomorrow to class: bring LA binder, folder, composition book, sharpies, pen/pencil.

Number the pages in your Language Arts handbook (front and back). Bring DailyGRAMS, vocab workbook, and The Giver tomorrow.
Wednesday - Introduction to DailyGRAMS and vocabulary workbook.  First grammar and vocab quiz Thursday, September 10th!
- Small-group Discussion:  Define "utopia."  Brainstorm the features of the society in The Giver by Lois Lowry.  Decide if each feature is positive, negative, or both.
Complete reading and writing surveys.

Finish revising your paper on The Giver.

- Grammar:  Capitalization Rules.
- Writing process: What is editing?  Go over editing tips.

- Culminating discussion on The Giver -- What really happens to Jonas and Gabriel?

- Reader Response:  Write a continuation of the ending of The Giver, clarifying what happened to Jonas and Gabriel and the community they left behind. At least one full page.

Finish reader response.

 

Finish editing your paper on The Giver.  Due Friday

   - Rough draft with revisions and editing
   - Project sheet with self-assessed rubric on back

Independent Reading.
Friday - Introduction to the Greek gods and goddesses! Choose 2 of the gods or goddesses we studied today.

Using one sheet of unlined paper per god, draw a full color picture of both gods.  Add the characteristics and symbols we mentioned in class, but your drawings should have NO WORDS on them!
 

 

 

 


Week 4:  September 21st - 25th, 2009

Monday

- Homeroom:  Introduction to Service Learning.

- Prepositions practice.

-Continue intro to Greek gods and goddesses.

Same homework as Friday, but choose 2 different gods/goddesses.
Tuesday

- Possessives practice
- Finish introducing the Greek gods and goddesses.

One more time :)  Same homework as yesterday, but choose 2 new gods/goddesses!


Also complete gods and goddesses reiew worksheet.

Wednesday - Greek gods and goddesses symbol memory practice.

- Greek roots, suffixes, and prefixes.
Finish Greek roots sheet (front) if you didn't in class, and then complete Greek prefixes (page 2).  Don't do Greek suffixes page (page 3) yet.
Thursday

- Apostrophes practice
- Review of Greek Roots and Prefixes, scavenger hunt for Greek suffixes!

 

 

Finish entire Greek Roots/Prefixes/Suffixes sheet if not already finished in class.
Friday Field Trip:  A Midsummer Night's Dream

Make "CN - Imaginary Dictionary" entry in LA Handbook.  Make up at least 5 "new words" that include a Greek prefix, root, and suffix (just like examples in class).  Write the "definition" of your "new word" beside it.

Begin planning MOTA project.

Prompt:  Make up your own hero and send him on a quest. Make sure to include some of the common elements we listed in our LA Handbook notes.  At least one full page in LA Handbook.

On a separate sheet of paper, write a full paragraph (at least five sentences) where each sentence uses a kenning to create a creative description.  Your paragraph should form a “mini-story.”

- Continue History of English Language: Middle English!

Mini-Canterbury Tales:  On a white sheet of paper (can use up to 2 sheets front and back – stapled), write your own mini-Canterbury Tales.  Imagine you and a group of friends are going on a pilgrimage to see something special.  Begin your story by describing your pilgrimage, and then include at least 2 “mini-stories” like Chaucer does.  Make sure to finish your pilgrimage!  Illustrate your tales as Chaucer’s manuscripts were illustrated (here are some examples of The Canterbury Tales illustrations:  1   2   3   4).

- Continue the History of English: Modern English!

-History of English skits.

 

In your LA Handbook, create "Blitz -- History of English summary."  In 6 sentences or less, summarize the entire history of English in your own words!  Think about how you can use the 6 sentences to best cover the major events that occurred so that your summary is complete.
Wednesday

-Continue History of English skits if necessary.

-Introduction to Middle Ages.

-Start Medieval tales: The Sword in the Stone.

Read chapters 1-2 of Crispin (12 pages should take under 20 minutes to read).  Circle words you need to look up (notice the glossary in the back of the book!) and underline new characters as they are introduced.  Bring Crispin to class starting tomorrow!

Thursday

-DailyGRAMS

-Introduction to Crispin.

-Read and discuss historical note. 

-Start character list.

Crispin Reading: Finish reading any of chapters 3-5 (12 pages)  that you didn't complete in class.  With the 12-20 minutes we read in class, this assignment should take 8 minutes or less.  Bring computers to class Monday.

-Create a map of Crispin's world.

 

Crispin reading: Read chapters 9-10 (7 pages), circling any words you need to look up and underlining/highlighting each new character.

Tidy and decorate Venn Diagram.  Mount map and venn diagram onto either side of construction paper for display.
