The children are really digesting borrowing and regrouping!  We have gone from the concrete level of working with manipulatives into a more symbolic level.  It is very exciting! Also, be sure to look at the weather every day  with your child.  Track the temperature. Predict and watch to see if the weather person was correct!

Homework:

This week, your child will bring home their nonfiction book to read with 6 spelling words.  As your child answers the comprehension questions, please know I will be looking for correct handwriting, punctuation and capital letters.  Your child should also read a minimum of 15 minutes daily.  Continue to practice those math facts to 20 every night.  Be sure to practice those play lines too!

Our Marc Brown story of the week is about Arthur's sister, D.W.  It is entitled D.W. the Picky Eater.  We will be creating a Venn Diagram between this book and another one called Gregory, the Terrible Eater.  Both of these books have a lot in common with a twisted ending!  It should be fun!

One of our centers this week is going to be a fine motor center. As you know, we have been working hard on our pencil grips, handwriting correctness, and writing stamina.  Out of the 7 children in our class, only 2 can tie their own shoes!  Remember that great handwriting and stamina for writing depends on strong muscles within our fingers and hands.  The more the children cut, open, paste, write, paint, squirt, snap, etc. the stronger their hands will become.  My goal is 100% shoe tying ability by the end of the week!  Start practicing at home now!

Social Studies:

How does the weather effect our community?  We will be talking about the weather this week and the importance of accurate forecasting.  We will even be creating a poem about a cloud.

Science:

Simple machines

We will continue to practice our keyboarding skills this week.  We learned how to hold our hands and which keys we can type with our left and our right hands.  Now is the time to start these great habits so that their computer skills will flourish as they grow older.  And look...this is another great way to develop those finger muscles!

Math:

Monday-Friday:

Fractions will still be our focus this week.  We will learn about the numerator and the denominator. We will study closely the relationships between fractions and how to add them.  Which would you rather have...2/3 of a cookie or 1/8th?  Talk about these things at the dinner table.  I always learn better when food is involved!
