Curriculum Map 2nd Grade Class Pages
Questions naturally arise from experience with the world around us. Inquiry-based science study enables children to realize they can raise and answer questions themselves. Second graders are actively engaged through hands-on and observational experiences in Science.
This year we will focus on several different topics in science class. We begin the year with a unit that focuses on gardening and plants. This unit ties in with our class gardening, which is headed up by Ms. Denham. We also look at the importance of trees and how they change...or don’t change through the seasons. Our second graders will create a project called, A Tree for all Seasons which incorporates science, Language Arts, and art. We will move on to examine soil and farming: both organic and non organic. This lends itself nicely to learning about healthy eating, the food groups, and the effects it has on the human body. We finish the year with units on the planets and a solar system play. Several mini-projects and field trips accompany this unit.
