Questions naturally arise from experience with the world around us. Inquiry-based science study enables children to realize they can raise and answer questions themselves. Second graders are actively engaged through hands-on and observational experiences in Science.

Through investigations, students identify the varying states of matter all around us. In order to understand the water cycle, students experiment with the different states of water by adding or removing heat. They explore how and why the water cycle plays a critical role in the functioning of the Earth system. Second graders examine the forces that affect our weather and climate. They track the weather in their community and determine how weather and climate influence our everyday lives.

Reflecting on what was learned in the course of an investigation is integral to building connections to previous knowledge. Reflection focuses not only on what was discovered, but also on the process of the investigation itself: What did we do that worked? What could we change next time to get more accurate results?
