This year in fourth grade we are studying Math and its relevance to modern society. We are looking at different mathematical operations and how technology can assist us in our pursuit to solve problems.
The year begins with an examination of how math is intertwined with daily life. The students start by researching an occupation of their interest. Next, they explore modern living expenses and how to budget according to the salary of their chosen occupation. These budgets include deductions for mortgage, auto payment, health and auto insurance, groceries, and any modern convenience expenses they wish to purchase. Finally, the students transfer their budgets into a computer spreadsheet program and write a reflection on their findings.
Throughout the year the students participate in activities that involve math application. Whether it be designing a disc golf course, creating and interpreting computer generated graphs, or analyzing the geometric forms of local architecture, the fourth graders obtain first hand knowledge of how math influences the world in which we live.
