This year in 5th grade we are exploring Math as a method for understanding how to solve problems. Mathematical logic is applicable to much more than deciding at what time Train A will intersect Train B if one leaves Houston at 10:30am traveling at 60 mph and the other from Dallas at 10:15 traveling 70 mph (anyway, you get the point).

Math is a crucial part of our world. It is even present in nature. One need only examine the fronds of a fern or observe a spider’s web to see math’s influence. Mankind, however, is the ultimate consumer of mathematical principle. It was used to construct the pyramids in Egypt, relied on by the ancient Incans to keep government records, and by the Mayans to create a calendar that is still accurate to this day.

My goal this year in 5th grade is for the students to realize that algebraic thought can be applied to problems far beyond those which involve numbers. We will strive as a class to understand the relevance of math to our world and our lives in it.
