Fifth Grade Spanish
Instructor: Abigayl Pansini
Curriculum Map, Class Page
This year in Spanish students discover how today’s Hispanic populations descend from a variety of indigenous cultures. Studying the pre-Columbian cultures throughout Latin America is an integrated unit with Language Arts, Social Studies, and Art. In Spanish, students will examine Incan Life by looking at their housing, foods, artefacts, myths & legends. This unit is followed up by studying the Kuna Indian populations of Panama where students create their own Mola as a final product. Other projects include a study on Hispanic Leaders like Simon Bolivar & Benito Juarez (in conjuction with Life Skills).
Fifth Grade students build a vocabulary foundation around categories, which includes family, food, parts of the house, clothing, body parts & descriptive/comparative adjectives while learning how to ask and answer basic questions related to each unit. Key phrases and commands are also taught throughout the year and a number of cognates (similar words English/Spanish) are continuously presented as well.
In grammar, students will be able to converse about daily things such as time, day, date, weather, and carry on with basic conversational greetings.
Questions to consider:
- What is the role of Pre-Columbian cultures in today’s society in Latin America?
- How do geographical features affect their community?
- Why is Spanish the official language of 19 countries in Latin America?
By the end of 5th grade Spanish, students must be able to conduct a basic introductory conversation using proper word order.
