Tuesday  5.27.08

In Class:  We will continue to work on "Thirteen Way" project.  Our work will be modeled after different artists using a variety of styles and media.

 

Homework:  Please bring a model of the item you are writing about to class on Tuesday.  If you cannot bring an item, please bring pictures of your item or see me.

In Class:  We will begin our integrated unit “Thirteen Ways”. In Language Arts class you will be writing about an object in 13 different ways and in Visual Arts class you will be illustrating your object in 13 different ways.  Our work will be modeled after thirteen different artists using a variety of styles and media.

Homework:  See you at the McColl Center Thursday evening.  Remember to write a 1/2 page reflection on the exhibition, Phantasmagoria, for extra credit.  In your reflection, you should write about your overall impression of the exhibition, your favorite piece, and an idea of how you could create an interactive page in your sketchbook.

In Class:   Critique Earth Ads.  Continue to work on Labels, Tags, and Misconceptions.  We will use our interviews and photos as a  source of inspiration for our t-shirt designs that will address gender stereotypes.  To prepare for the visit from artist Janet Lasher on Thursday we will create outlines of t-shirts in our sketchbooks and also prepare full-sized outlines to use in our design process.

Labels, Tags, and Misconceptions

Tuesday 1.22.08

In Class:   Remember to bring in your examples of persuasive advertising.  We will discuss these in class and begin preliminary work on our advertisements for  the Earth.  We will also begin work on our grant project, “Labels, Tags, and Misconceptions”, by first analyzing work of master portrait photographers and then looking at ways to take interesting photographs of each other.  We will also  learn how to use the digital cameras. 

 

Homework:  Photograph yourself in a personal environment.  If you have a digital camera available to use, you may want to take several photos of yourself and/or objects in an environment that visually tells a story about who you are, what you value, identifies a cause you believe in, etc. and print them if possible.  We will go over this assignment in class. Please also bring items to school that help define who you are and we will take photographs of each other in art class next week. 

 

 

The Art of Advertising

In Class:  We will begin our unit on advertising, “Buy Me! Buy Me!”  We will analyze advertisements and learn about the techniques advertisers use to get you to buy their products. 

 

Homework:  Look for examples of the way advertisements persuade the consumer.  You may  find these on t.v., radio, billboards, or in magazines. Come prepared to explain the technique used in the advertisement.

 

Art of the Renaissance

Tuesday 12.18.07

In Class:  Bring complete notebook pages, filled with drawings and observations,  to class.  Studio time to finish Renaissance Portraits and perspective.  We will also look at the work of Raphael and Michelangelo.

In Class:  Bring complete notebook pages, filled with drawings and observations, to class.  Also bring a picture of your Renaissance Mind.  We will look at the work of Renaissance artists, learn how to draw a perspective and complete a portrait of yourself with your Renaissance friend.

Tuesday 11.06.07

In Class:  Finish photographing the animated city.  Introduction to art of the Middle Ages and hidden symbolism used in masterworks.  We will update our Pictionary and Illustrated Timeline and begin preliminary work for a mixed media personal icon piece. 

 

From Paper to Skyscraper

Tuesday - 10.29.07

In Class:  Share your animal drawings.  Continue to work on painting building and getting it ready for our animated city.  Create animals for the animation project based on the book you read in Service Learning last week. 

Tuesday - 10.23.07

In Class:  Architecture quiz.  Finish up animal drawings and paintings of buildings.  We will begin to create our 3-D stage for our cityscape. 

 

Animal Advocates

Tuesday - 10.16.07

In Class:  This week we will be using our drawing skills to make detailed drawings of our science study animals. We will be testing our knowledge of architecture history next week.  You will be able to use your architectural booklet to answer questions on a short quiz. 

 

 

From Paper to Skyscraper

Tuesday - 10.9.07

In Class:  You will design a building that combines historical elements with modern day functioning.  You will begin by building the basic shape of the building using blocks, then draw your buildings using your knowledge of forms.  All of our buildings will be combined to create a cityscape.

 

 

Tuesday - 10.2.07

In Class:  We will discuss our field trip to Charlotte, look at the drawings of our peers, and finish our skyscraper drawing.  We will also write thank-you cards to the artists who shared their work with us at McColl Center - Sharif Bey, Rob Carter and Nava Lubelski. 

 

Art studio today will be to glaze mythical creatures.  You will also design a building that combines historical elements with modern day functioning.  You will begin by building the basic shape of the building using blocks, then draw your buildings using your knowledge of forms.  All of our buildings will be combined to create a cityscape. 

 

Tuesday - 9.25.07

In Class:  We will be looking at buildings througout history and examining our assigned building, identifying defining characteristics.  Remember to bring the photo and research from your assigned building (see last week’s assignment)

 

We will also prepare for our trip to Charlotte on Friday where we will meet and look at the work of artist, Rob Carter. Carter's recent focus is with architectural imagery - specifically the icon of sports arenas and other 'religious' iconic structures. He is currently working on a photographic series dealing with the destruction and reconstruction of the New NETS arena in Brooklyn. We will also be touring various buildings in Charlotte and creating drawings of buildings and architectural details. 

 

Tuesday - 9.18.07

In Class:  We will begin our unit on architecture, from Paper to Skyscraper. In this unit you will be learning about major architectural styles such as Classical, Gothic, and Art Deco and identify famous architectural structures throughout Europe. 

 

This week you will compare different styles of buildings, learn how to draw forms, and apply this skill to drawing the Parthenon. 

 

Homework:  Bring a photo of your building and requested information (see below) to class next week.  Please see me if you are having trouble finding a photo or forgot your building.  You should only go to the following website, click on your style and find your building on the list.  Print a larger size photo of your building.  Black and white is fine.
