In Class:  Introduction to the painting style of ancient Egypt.  Practice presentations for Thursday.

 

Homework:  See you at the McColl Center Thursday evening.  Remember to write a 1/2 page reflection on the exhibition, Phantasmagoria, for extra credit.  In your reflection, you should write about your overall impression of the exhibition, your favorite piece, and an idea of how you could create an interactive page in your sketchbook.

In Class: Egypt.  You will work as a team of archaeologist to uncover the ancient sites along the Nile. 

 

Wednesday  4.9.08

In Class:  Studio day to research your ancient Egyptian site and to begin creating interactive pieces.  You may also do an y  printing or embellishment on your t-shirt.

In Class:  Continue to work on Labels, Tags, and Misconceptions.  We will use our  service learning reflections and photos as a  source of inspiration for our t-shirt designs addressing poverty.

 

Wednesday 2.27.08

We will also look at work of contemporary artist Kofi Setordji to see how he addresses the issues of Genocide.  You will use this as a starting point for your Apartheid mixed media project.

Wednesday 2.20.08

In Class:  Continue to work on Labels, Tags, and Misconceptions.  We will use our service learning reflections and photos as a  source of inspiration for our t-shirt designs addressing poverty.  To prepare for the visit from artist Janet Lasher on Thursday we will create outlines of t-shirts in our sketchbooks and also prepare full-sized outlines to use in our design process.

 

Art of Africa - The Environment

 

Monday 2.11.08 & Wednesday 1.13.08

In Class:  Studio time on Monday to finish up animal drawing. On Wednesday we will  begin our portrait work. 

Homework:  Bring a printed image of a tribal member for Wednesday.

 

Art of Africa - Symbolism

Monday 1.28.08

In Class:  We will use studio time on Monday to finish up our masks, landscapes, and tattoo art. 

 

Wednesday 1.30.08

In Class:  We will present our masks and continue working on our animal drawings.  Remember to bring in a photo of an animal from your African region.

 

Wednesday 1.22.08

In Class:  We will continue working on our masks that reflect our place in society.  We will add embellishments today.  Please bring in at least 3 items that can be fastened to your mask and demonstrate your place in society .  Also bring your laptops or printed photos of your animals to class. 

We will present our landscapes and masks next week. 

Homework:  You must bring in at least 3 items to attach to your mask. 

 

Monday 1.14.08 & Wednesday 1.16.08

In Class:  We will continue working on our masks that reflect our place in society.  We will add glaze and work on our embellishments.   We will continue to work on our landscape drawings and will begin drawing the animal of our tribe’s region.  Please bring an animal photo to class or have one ready on your computer.

 

Monday 1.7.08 & Wednesday 1.9.08

In Class:  We will continue working on our masks that reflect our place in society.  We will add glaze and work on our embellishments.   Half of the class will work on various drawing techniques using National Geographic magazines as a source of inspiration.  We will begin with landscapes.

Monday 12.17.07

In Class:  Discuss what was learned on the Mint field trip.  Look at examples of masks and discuss the significance of masks from African cultures.  Design your mask to create out of clay on Wednesday.

Homework:  Create a paper pattern for mask if you did not complete in class.  Collect items to attach to your masks.

Wednesday 11.07.07

In Class:  Bring preliminary drawings for tea houses to class today to show me and then design pattern.  We will discuss the physical and chemical properties of clay.  Build tea house and continue to work on pieces for garden.

In Class:  Finish mounting prints and work on circle design.  Share Sumi-e paintings.

In Class:  We will look at Asian architecture and gardens.  Review the basics of working with clay and begin to design Zen garden.

Sumi-e

Monday 10.22.07

In Class:  We will take a short quiz to demonstrate our knowledge of printmaking and then use the remaining class time to plan Fall Social. 

 

Wednesday 10.24.07

In Class:  We will create our final Sumi-e paintings and Haiku.  We will also mount our prints for display and continue to work on our circle design. 

 

Monday 11.05.07

Sumi-e

Wednesday 10.17.07

In Class:  We will learn a few more basic brushstrokes of Sumi-e.  Then work on our nature Haiku and illustrations.  Next week we will take a short quiz to demonstrate our knowledge of printmaking.  Review your notes. 

 

 

Printmaking

Monday 10.8.07 & Wednesday 10.10.07

In Class:  Studio day to work on 2nd printblock and circle design project. 

 

On Wednesday we will learn the basic brushstrokes on Sumi-e.  We will apply this technique to our Haiku illustrations. 

 

Monday 10.1.07 & Wednesday 10.3.07

In Class:  We will discuss our meeting with artist Ryan O’Malley and also create a thank-you card for him.  Students who have not pulled their final prints will do that today.  Then we will apply the printing techniques and design ideas we learned about from Ryan to create a second print. 

 

Monday 9.24.07 & Wednesday 9.26.07

In Class:  Studio day to finish print blocks, pull proofs and final prints.  We will also do hand altering of prints.  You can then create a printblock of your choice.  

 

Monday 9.17.07 & Wednesday 9.19.07

In Class:  We will look at art from the Edo Period (1603-1868) in Japan.  The most popular art form during this period was the woodblock print, often referred to as ukiyo-e.  What do the ukiyo-e prints tell us about Edo Period Japan?

 

Remember to bring your preliminary drawing for your printblock to class. We will look at the relief printing process. 

 

Homework:  Finalize pattern for printblock.  Bring to class on Wednesday so you may begin carving.
