Curriculum Map, Class Page, Class Guidelines
In mathematics, students examine how individual decisions about resources can impact larger societies. For example, students create simulations based on the One-Child Policy in China to see how family planning decisions impact the growth and resources of a country.
Students then investigate how individuals make decisions on how to use their resources. They use spreadsheets to create budgets and learn the basics of financial planning such as how car loans work. They evaluate these decisions based on the standards of living in other parts of the world.
Finally, students learn about how humans’ basic need for shelter has changed and developed over time. They study the decisions that go into the creation of our habitats today and design homes that incorporate green building techniques.
Students will be asked to consider the following questions:
- How do individual decisions about resources impact societies? What responsibilities do governments and world organizations have to respond to the needs of individuals?
- How do humans decide where to allocate their individual resources?
- How do humans define their space or territory? How has this changed over time?
