Checklist, Spanish Course Guidelines

In Spanish this year, students focus on 'the places' of Latin America by taking an in-depth look at four Spanish-speaking countries: Venezuela, Argentina, Equatorial Guinea & Costa Rica.  The regional culture, society, current events, and history are discussed as well as discovering what makes each one unique.  Students complete a ‘mini-project’ along with each country surveyed, which focuses on a cultural aspect in particular:  politics, weather & season reversal, cusine, and eco-tourism respectively.  Students also complete more in-depth projects where they create a menu, a weather forecast, and a house floor plan in Spanish, each relating to their vocabulary topics at the time.

In grammar, students learn to conjugate all irregular, spelling change, and stem-changing verbs in the present tense. Through in-class discussions, students gain insight to many other perspectives outside their own as they learn to converse about daily things in life, such as pastimes, food, housing, and clothing. Several writing samples are completed throughout the academic year where the end goal is for students to be able to write a paragraph with ease (and not much reliance on the dictionary).

Questions to consider:

  • How does Latin America as a whole differ from one region to another?
  • How does the culture within each region differ? How do the people, food, etc. differ from one region to another?
  • What are some typical characteristics of Latin America? How do we distinguish those characteristics from generalized stereotypes?

By the end of 7th grade Spanish, students must be able to: conjugate stem-changing verbs, use the present progressive mode, discuss their likes and dislikes while conversing and expressing information in more detail.
