Checklist, Spanish Course Guidelines
In Spanish this year, students focus on 'the places' of Latin America by taking an in-depth look at four Spanish-speaking countries: Venezuela, Argentina, Equatorial Guinea & Costa Rica. The regional culture, society, current events and history are discussed as well as discovering what makes each one unique. Students complete a ‘mini-project’ along with each country surveyed, which focuses on a cultural aspect in particular: politics, weather & season reversal, food, and eco-tourism respectively. Students also complete more in-depth projects where they create travel guides, menus, weather forecasts, and house floor plans in Spanish, each relating to their vocabulary topics at the time.
In grammar, students learn to conjugate all irregular, spelling change and stem-changing verbs in the present tense. Through in-class discussions, students gain insight to many other perspectives outside their own as they learn to converse about daily things in life, such as pastimes, food, housing, and clothing.
Text: Navegando 1B is a continuation text, which is used to aid in the application of grammar. It is considered Part 2 of Spanish I.
Questions to consider:
- How does Latin America as a whole differ from one region to another? How does the culture within each region differ as well?
- How do the people differ from one region to another?
- What are some typical characteristics of Latin America? And, how do we distinguish those characteristics from stereotypes?
By the end of 7th grade Spanish, students must be able to: conjugate stem-changing verbs, use the present progressive, discuss their likes and dislikes while conversing in more detail and expressing information efficiently.
