From Ordinary to Extraordinary 

Week 1

Wednesday 9.2.09

Throughout this year we will be looking at artists and cultural groups who have created extraordinary things from ordinary objects.  For our first project, we will be creating interesting drawings of objects or animals based on the ordinary #2 pencil.  

 

Week 2 

Wednesday 9.9.09

In class:  Studio day to finish your #2 Pencil drawing.  

We will also organize our sketchbooks for the year and begin to think about, "What Drives You?", to come up with a topic for our research journals.   Bring your computers to class this week to begin art research.

 

Friday 9.11.09

In Class:  Studio day for Art Research Journal (ARJ).  Complete two pages by Friday of next week.  

 

Week 3

Wednesday 9.16.09

In Class:  Introduction to cartooning.  Discuss how to create drawings for animation.  Create cartoon characters. 

Homework:  ARJ - two pages due on Friday.  

 

Friday 9.18.09

In Class:  Studio day for Art Research Journal & #2 Pencil drawing.

 

Week 4

Wednesday 9.23.09 

 In Class:   Introduction to Japanese brush painting.  You will learn different techniques and then illustrate your Haikus on a scroll painting or miniature screen.  

 

Friday 9.25.09  

In Class:  Studio day for Haiku illustrations.  

 

Week 5

Wednesday 9.30.09

In Class:  Lesson on Calligraphy.  Create final scroll painting that illustrates haiku. 

 

Thursday 10.1.09  

In Class: Studio day for Art Research Journal art history pages.  Turn in ARJ on Friday.  Finish cartoon drawing sample page.

Week 6

Wednesday 10.6.09

In Class:  Introduction to animation.  We will look at examples of styles and begin to develop characters.

Studio time - Finish and assess scrolls.  Work on art history and creative pages of ARJ (page 3 & 4 due by Thursday)

 

Week 7

Wednesday 10.14.09

In Class:  Look at more examples of animation.  Studio time to work in collaborative art groups on development of animation project.  

 

Week 8

Wednesday 10.21.09

In Class:  Discuss Rob Carter video we watched at McColl.  What ideas may we use in our own work?

Reflect on the prints we viewed in the exhibition.  Discuss the work of Diane Hughes, her focus on trees as her subject matter, and how we can apply what we learned from her to our ARJ pages.

Studio time:  Work in your animation group

 

Homework:  For pages 5-6 of your ARJ - Look at your topic through the lens of popular culture (your surroundings).  Use the technique of Kahled Hafez (McColl artist in residence)

Peace Poster (if you choose to participate) is due October 28th.  Remember the size restriction (13"x20" min. and 20"x24" max.)  Must be 2-D (nothing may be glued to the surface)  

 

Week 9

Wednesday 10.28.09

In Class:  Compare and contrast Western animated films to Japanese Anime - reflect and discuss. Studio time to work on sets and characters for your animated film.
