Algebra I Course Guidelines

I. Course Description

In the first trimester of Algebra I, we will briefly review pre-algebra skills and then study the properties of real numbers and linear equations and functions. The second trimester will focus on linear inequalities, systems of linear equations, and exponential functions. During the final trimester, we will concentrate on quadratic equations, polynomials and factoring, rational equations, and radicals. Through the year, we will learn how to use equations to model and solve application problems.

II. Materials

• Math binder with dividers, notepaper paper, and graph paper.

• Textbook.

• Pencils.

• Algebra – TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator.

III. Daily Procedures

Most class days will begin with a discussion of the previous night’s homework, and then we will begin the new lesson for the day. Students will have a variety of opportunities to participate in class including working problems on the white boards, teaching their peers new concepts, solving application problems in a group, and completing exercises in the workbook. Students who are absent from class are responsible for checking the school website or their chapter schedule in their notebook for their assignments. If a student needs extra help outside of the classroom, they need to schedule a time with the teacher.

IV. Homework Policies

Students should anticipate at least 30 minutes of math homework each night, Monday through Friday. In order to receive full credit, students must attempt all problems. If the student works for diligently for 45 uninterrupted minutes and is still not finished with the homework assignment, they should have a parent sign the homework they have completed, and the student will get credit. It is essential to the students’ progress in math that they do their homework everyday. I will not grade the homework on accuracy, although part of classroom participation is checking and correcting the homework. All students begin with 50 daily points for the trimester. For each day that they do not have their homework assignment, they will lose two points. Incomplete homework will cause the students to lose one point. Students who disruptive class or do not participate may lose daily points.
