Eighth Grade Overview

8th Grade Class Page

Big Question: How did we get here?

Culminating Project: Throughout the year, in all subject areas, students investigate this question.  In an effort to understand how we got where we are today, students examine and analyze changes through time with specific emphasis on America's cities.  At the end of the year, students apply what they have learned by developing "smart growth" solutions for local urban communities.

Students take on the role of urban planner, using knowledge and skills from their courses to explore and solve population growth issues facing America's cities.  Students use algebraic models of population growth in US Cities to explore the population changes of the late 20th century.  American History research skills are used to become an expert on social trends that lead to urban and suburban population growth with a special focus on Charlotte.  Students learn the principles of New Urbanism and use them to redesign an existing Charlotte neighborhood to create an environmentally sustainable community.  Finally, students write a proposal and create a presentation explaining and promoting a new neighborhood design to a fictional City Board of Commissioners.
