Summer Math Assignment Guidelines
· Your summer math assignment is to complete all the exercises on pages 2 – 6, except the four surface area and volume problems, at the website:
http://hs.houstonisd.org/westsidehs/academics/summer/Geometry%20Summer%20Packet%202009.pdf
· The completed exercises are due the first day of the new school year.
· You will receive a grade on this assignment.
· Your work should be neat, legible, organized and complete.
· Clearly label your answers.
· Write out your steps and show your work.
· Complete all problems without a calculator.
The summer math exercises will help you prepare for Geometry. They will provide you with the opportunity to reinforce your mathematical knowledge and skills that will be necessary to succeed in Geometry. The purpose of this assignment is that you return to school in August with a recall of the math you learned in Algebra. There are examples of how to do the problems on pages 7 – 11.
Do not wait until the end of the summer to begin this assignment and do not to try to complete all the exercises at one time. The completed assignment is due the first day of the new school year. We will correct the problems in class during the first week of school.
In the first trimester of Geometry, we will study the basics of geometry, reasoning and proof, perpendicular and parallel lines and congruent lines. The second trimester will focus on properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, transformations, and similarity. During the final trimester, we will concentrate on right triangles and trigonometry, circles, area of polygons, and surface area and volume. Through the year, we will use definitions, postulates, axioms, theorems in proofs. We will also complete geometric constructions and solve real-life problems using logic and reasoning.
I am looking forward to the new school year, but first I am going to enjoy the summer. I know you are ready for summer too. Have fun and enjoy your summer vacation!
