In Class: How to look at Modern Art. We will look at the work of American artist Robert Rauschenberg, focusing specifically on his printworks. We will also discuss the assignment for DC.

In Class: We will look at the work of abstract expressionists artists, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, William de Kooning, Barnett Newman, and Helen Frankenthaler, who shared a commitment to creating large-scale works that presented the act of painting as an expression of internal creative energies. The New York school was the first American art movement to have international impact and attract wide interest in Europe.

In class: 35 mm slides - We will create a work of art using the 35 mm slide as a foundation. You will carry out a theme or tell a story using three slides.
Homework: Continue to take photos modeled after your chosen master photographer. Bring your photos on your desktop to class on Monday. If you need to wait until your trip to Charlotte to take photos, write a short description or plan for the photographs you will try to take on Friday.

In Class: Bring computers to class. Discuss the digital images from our field trip on Friday and make a list of ideas for video art piece. Hand-alter spacescapes.
Homework: Choose an artist from the list below and find photos of their work on the website provided only!!! Print two photos in black and white and bring to class on Friday. Photos must be at least 4”x6” in size. If you are not able to access and print photos at home please see me before Friday.

In Class: We will use our sketches from our field trip on Friday to recreate a landscape painting in the realism style. We will use acrylic to add color to our drawings.

In Class: We will look at the history of American landscape painting, beginning with early sketches used to record historic events before the invention of the camera.
We will also peer critique our mini landscape drawings and learn some landscape drawing tips from each other.
Homework: You will complete two landscape sketches and four drawings of objects such as different types of trees or buildings you may find in the landscape on your field trip to Kings Mountain and Cowpens on Friday. Bring these drawings to class on Monday. We will use these and your photographs as a starting point for our final landscape.

In Class: On Monday, we will complete and sign our community canvas rug project for the auction and take a photo. We will also complete our Admired American portraits and frame them. Remember to bring your landscape minis to class on Monday. On Friday we will begin our study of American Landscape paintings.
Homework: For Friday - do two mini drawings (1/4 sketchbook page) of landscapes. Remember to apply what we discussed in class - proportion, use of foreground, middle ground, background, rules of thirds, etc. This can be in pen or pencil.
