College Application Workshop (parents and students)

Wednesday, September 16, 6:30 at Woodlawn

 

PSAT will be taken in October at Woodlawn.

PLAN (pre-ACT) will be taken in December at Woodlawn.

 

Individual College Planning Process

1.    Individual intake session with student and parent(s) at Woodlawn

     a.    Introduction to the individual college planning process

     b.    Clarification of roles (counselor, school, parent, student)

     c.    Recommendations around SAT/ACT, activities, summer plans

     d.    Student history (grades, scores, activities, career goals, etc.)

2.    Inventory session with student at Woodlawn

     a.    Learning and Study Strategies Inventory

     b.    Myers Briggs Type Indicator

     c.    Strong Interest Inventory

     d.    College Self-Survey

3.    Interview session with student at Woodlawn

     a.    Discussion with student about the type of college environment desired

     b.    Review results of Strong Interest Inventory and begin discussing careers

4.    Review session with student and parent(s) at Woodlawn

     a.    Results and interpretation of all inventories

     b.    Discussion of any areas of concern

     c.    List of recommended colleges

5.    Follow-up session with student at Woodlawn

     a.    Teach student to research colleges and careers

     b.    Follow-up with recommendations from report

     c.    Provide guidance around campus visits

     d.    Review grades and test scores

     e.    Work with student to compare colleges and come up with the final apply list

 

Application Essay Workshop (students only)

Wednesday, May 26th at 8:20 am

Students will explore the purpose of the college application essay. They will read samples of successful essays and will learn about common mistakes to avoid. They will brainstorm topics and write a first draft of one essay for a school of their choice. The essay will be peer-edited and edited by the college counselor. Students will then work more on the essay and email it to the counselor for further feedback and revisions. When additional essays are required, the counselor will be available by email throughout the summer for suggestions and feedback.
