Assessment

Journals -

Each student will be required to listen to and read Spanish for 30 min (each = 1 hour total) a week and reflect upon it in a 1/2 page journal entry.  These journals will be turned in every Friday and will be worth 15 pts a week (150 points per trimester) and will be returned to them that same day.  Students will receive a page full of links/sources where they are able to read and watch Spanish related articles/videos.  Students should comment and document what they listened or read each week as well as reflecting upon the experience.  They should also include new words/phrases that they've learned in the articles.  Occasionally I will assign a specific entry that they will be required to write about (but should still document their 1 hour of reading/listening) for that week.  The students should also include a part to show "what I can do now" that shows the grammar skill they have mastered during class during the week.

Participation -

Each Student will start out each trimester with 100 out of 100 participation points.  Students will lose points during the trimester for not being prepared to class (bringing the correct materials), answering/asking questions in English when English is prohibited, speaking to classmates in English when English is prohibited, etc.  Students can however earn participation points during the trimester through various activities/participation.

Quizzes -

May or may not be given in advance.  Pop quizzes usually relate to readings while vocabulary/grammar quizzes will be given with several days notice.  Quiz point value usually is between 15-25 points

Tests -

Are given at the end of Chapters/Books.  They usually range from 70-100 points.  Students that miss a test due to an unexcused absence will take the test on the day they return.  If a test is missed due to an excused absence, students may have up to 2 days after they return to complete the test.

Homework/Class work -

Homework is given almost on a daily basis (even though you should study Spanish every day!) and is checked for completion.  Work done in class is also graded on a completion scale as well.  For homework and classwork that is well organized and complete in every aspect (complete sentences, questions written, ect) will receive full credit.  Work that is not 100% complete and that will be 1-2 points off the total value of the assignment.  Work that is not complete but also unacceptable will result in 3-5 points off.   Not following instructions, answers in partial English, and questions left blank are some examples of types of work that would fall into this category.  Homework and classwork usually ranges from 7-10 points.

Projects/Papers -

Projects and papers are be given at least once a trimester and several weeks in advance.  They range from 50-100 pts in value.

Exams -

Are given at the end of each trimester and are comprehensive of the work completed during that period.  They account for up to 20% of the final grade for that trimester.

Grade Record Sheet:  A grade record sheet is given at the beginning of each trimester to help the student keep track of their own progress during the class.  This is also used as a means of communicating their progress to their parents.  It should be kept in their binder and updated on a regular basis.

Translators:  Any type of device or website that translates a students work from English into Spanish other than a dictionary is prohibited from the classroom.  Any work that is found to have been created using a translator will NOT be accepted.  Dictionaries are encouraged in the classroom and a personal favourite online dictionary is www.spanishdict.com.

Late Work:  Late homework/classwork is not accepted and the student will receive a zero.  Late projects and papers will be lowered a letter grade for each day it is late up until one week, after which the paper/project will no longer be accepted and will result in a 0.

Excused Absences:  Students are responsible for checking their class folder for any missed assignments upon returning from an absence.  Please check your class page for classwork and homework, or see Mr Burton before or after school.  The student will have 2 days after returning to school to complete the missed work unless prior arrangements have been made.

Unexcused Absence:  I will determine whether work should be done before or after the absence if it is due to a family trip, otherwise all work missed during the unexcused absence should be turned in upon returning to class.  Any quizzes or tests missed due to an unexcused absence will be completed the day the student returns.  All missed classwork and homework can be found on the class page and will result in a 0 if not turned in upon returning to class unless prior arrangements have been made.
