Yiasou Greek Festival

600 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203

To enhance our study of Greece in social studies we will attend the Yiasou Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 600 East Boulevard in Charlotte. At the festival we will tour the Greek Orthodox church, visit some Greek culture rooms, eat lunch and shop at the craft and pastry booths.  Students should bring money for lunch ($10-$14).  Students may also bring money for Greek pastries and trinket shopping if they would like. We will be eating indoors choosing from a variety of Greek lunch plates, including vegetarian and also chicken, lamb and fish options.  We need five drivers for this trip, so come along and join the fun!  Please email cadenham@woodlawnschool.org if you can drive! 6th Grade Field Trip

Children's Theatre of Charlotte/The Giver

The 6th grade class will be going to see the play The Giver based on the book by Lois Lowry.  With this being the assigned summer reading, we have been having great class discussions in anticipation of this event.  We will leave campus at 8:15 and return at 12:00 to have lunch and attend afternoon classes.  We have enough drivers for this trip.  If you have any questions, please contact cpackard@woodlawnschool.org .

October 23 5:15-8:306th Grade Fall Social - Carrigan Farms Hayride and Bonfire

On October 23 Woodlawn's 6th grade class will travel to Carrigan Farms for our fall social!  Our class will take a hayride to enjoy the fall colors, smell the sweet hay and enjoy each other's company.  Then we will roast hot dogs and some-mores on a bonfire and enjoy twilight.  What a wonderful way to enjoy the crisp fall weather and all your classmates!  

There will not be costumes for the 6th grade social.  After discussion with the parents, we decided to take the safest approach.  Since we go on a hay ride and have a marshmallow/wiener roast around a bonfire, thin/flimsy Halloween costumes with capes and such are not compatible with prickly hay and fire.  It will be cold out, so students will be wearing jackets anyway!

8th grade history and art field trip to Charlotte for an architectural walking tour and tour of the American Collection at the Mint Museum as part the current study of our essential question, "How did we get here?" Please drop students off at Sadler Square shopping center in Davidson (on Griffith Street near Our Town Cinema) by 8:50 am. Do not drop students off earlier than this time as there will not be a teacher there until 8:50. Please pick up students at Northcross Park and Ride at 2:55.  Note: The location for pick up is different than drop off.  The Northcross Park and Ride lot is off of Northcross Drive on exit 25 west of highway 77. Turn right onto Northcross drive, which is after the Food Lion and before Birkdale. See Map on bus schedule.  Students need to bring money for lunch and may want to bring a small snack, as well. Congratulations to the 6th Grade Quiz Bowl team for placing 9th in the Southeastern United States among 6th grade teams.  The team worked well together and showed true Woodlawn grit answering 84% of the 100 difficult questions correctly!  Great job, team!!

Please bring your donations with you to the Poverty Simulation at Woodlawn School (in the red barn) on Tuesday, December 18^th, or items may be dropped off in the bins in the art room (Van Buren Art South) from now until January 18^th. 

The 8th grade students are collecting the following items and will deliver them to the residents at the Brian Center during their annual holiday program on December 14^th.     

1. BINGO prizes and trivia game prizes and small items to put in gift bags for the residents.  (Suggestions: small flashlights with batteries, winter socks, note pads with pens, mini bottles of lotion, travel size packages of tissues, etc)

2. Individually wrapped FUN-sized candy, (Hershey Bars, Hershey Kisses, M&M’s, Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups, 3 Musketeers, Holiday Junior Mints - No nuts, caramel, coconut, or hard candy!)

3. Beanie Babies (The residents love these!  These can be older ones that are clean.  We give these out all year, so they do not have to be Christmas Beanies.)

4. Gift cards, (Target, WalMart, and Dollar Store), to buy game prizes and to use for the Senior Prom

5. Money donations to purchase gift bag items, Little Debbie snacks, and BINGO prizes

6. Holiday ribbon to tie around fleece blankets (at least 1.5 inches in width)

7. Small gift bags (The students will fill these and distribute to the residents on December 14.)

8. LARGE PRINT Seek and Find Word Puzzle books with mechanical pencils 

Please bring gifts to Jackson Hall (history classroom) by Wednesday, December 12th.  You may also bring gifts to our blanket-making work period and lunch in the Lodge on Thursday, December 6.

Service Pillow Project for Breast Cancer (Wednesday March 28, 3:30-4:30)
Students in grades 4-12 and all teachers are invited to come to the lodge to help sew pillows for breast cancer patients. Leela Wissmann and Emily Kinser are leading this activity to help local women battling breast cancer. These pillows are 8x 11, hand sewn, and are a great comfort to those who are dealing with cancer.  These pillows will be delivered to breast cancer patients. Everybody between grades 4-12 can come, even if you can’t sew. Inexperienced sewers will be taught. Load cars and depart at 7:00!  Don't get left behind!!  We will return about 4:30 or 5:00 on Wednesday!

Packing List:  Our class trip is rapidly approaching!  Please find the packing list for our trip to Tremont here. What to Bring1.pdf  If you would also like a printed copy, please ask Mrs. Denham!  A letter to all parents will be sent out at the beginning of next week outlining exact departure time and other information you might like!  We have been going to this camp for four years and we always have a great experience!  Next week in science we will be learning about why the Smokies are the Salamander Capital of the World!

5/12-5/13 - 7th overnight trip. Depart Thursday 7:15 am (be at school by 7:00) return Friday 7:45 pm.  Cost is $230 per student.  Checks can be made out to WOODLAWN SCHOOL and should be turned in to Ms. Nancy by April 15. Chaperones are Ms. Shoemaker, Ms. Ruble, Mr. Rose.  Drivers are needed.  Please email jruble@woodlawnschool.org
