Course Description

Classroom rules:
1.  Arrive on time for class, and ready to participate.
2.  Class begins when you enter the classroomYou should promptly take your assigned seat, pull out the previous night’s homework assignment, and quietly begin the ‘Math Warm-Up’All other materials should be put away.
3.  Speak and act respectfully towards your classmates and teacher.
4.  Clean up after yourself before leaving the room.
5.  At the end of the period, please wait for Dr. Stutzman to finish speaking and dismiss you from class.

Materials
Please bring the following to class everyday:
o        Math binder with dividers and notebook paper
o        Textbook: Precalculus with Limits, Larson, 1st Edition
o        Two pencils for homework/tests
o        Two pens (blue or black ink only) for taking notes and checking homework

Daily Procedures
After the daily warm-up, most class days will begin with a discussion of the previous night’s homework and then the teacher will proceed with the new lesson for the day. Students will have a variety of opportunities to participate in class including working problems on the board, teaching peers new concepts, and solving group word problems. Students who are absent from class are responsible for checking the school website for their assignments. The teacher is available for extra help before or after school and by appointment.

Homework Policies
Students should expect at least 20 minutes of homework each night. In order to receive full credit, students must attempt all problems. A grade for accuracy, however, will not be given on homework assignments. Occasionally, the teacher may collect and correct homework to monitor each student’s progress. It is ESSENTIAL that students do their homework thoroughly everyday; homework is a great way to practice concepts learned in class. Students may work cooperatively on homework assignments, however each student must complete his/her own work.

Please adhere to the following Guidelines for Homework. I will ask you to redo the assignment if the following instructions are not followed:
1.       Always use a full heading on the first two lines of the first page:
Name                                                             Date
Grade/Class                   Assignment/Subject

For any additional pages, write your name and page number on the first line.
2.      After the heading, skip a line and begin the first problem. You should also skip a line in between each problem.
3.      Always use pencil.
4.      Show all of your work!!
5.      Handwriting must be neat and legible.
Late assignments
Homework assignments are due the next day at the beginning of class.  Homework is not accepted late.

Extra Help
ANYTIME that you do not understand a class lesson or assignment, you should ask Dr. Stutzman--preferrably during class or before or after school for help. Also, I usually arrive at school about 30 minutes prior to the beginning of classes, and am available to answer any questions that come up while working on your homework assignment.

Grading
Each student’s grade will be based on their overall portfolio. Included in the portfolio will be the following items:

  • In-class ActivitiesWith each unit, students will complete activities for their portfolios that connect the material with another discipline or a real-world situation. These portfolio entries are worth about half as much as a test

  • TestsThere will be 3-4 tests per trimesterStudents will be given approximately a week’s notice before all testsStudents who miss a test due to an unexcused absence should be prepared to take the test upon their return to schoolStudents who miss a test due to an excused absence have two days to schedule a make-up time. Tests are worth 100 points.

  • QuizzesThere will be several quizzes per trimesterQuizzes will be announced at least one day before they are givenThese quizzes will follow the same make-up policy as tests. Sometimes pop “Quick Quizzes” will be given for the students’ use in assessing what they do and do not knowNo grade will be given for these quizzes. Quizzes are worth about 1/3 of a test.

  • Homework/ParticipationHomework will be checked daily for effort and completion.

The Trimester grade will be a weighted average of Quizzes and Projects, Chapter Assessments/Test, Homework, and Class Participation. Students will keep track of their own progress on their grade record sheet. This sheet should be kept in the student’s portfolio or notebook, and parents are welcome to check this sheet and other portfolio work any day before or after school.
