Tuesday, Sept. 2

 

WELCOME, Willkomme, Selam, Bienvenidos, Foon ying, Sushri akal, Swaagatam back to an exciting new year! Today we became acquainted with one another as well as our schedule. We organized supplies, lockers, and binders, in addition to beginning our lessons in grammar and geography.

 

HMWK: Bring summer reading novels: Dear Mr. Henshaw (4) and Island of Blue Dolphins (5) to class tomorrow. Write a letter of introduction to me, telling me about things you'd like me to know as your new teacher!

 

Practice for the Geography and Spelling Bees (dates TBA).

 

Wednesday, Sept. 3

 

LA (4): We are starting the year with our summer reading novel, Dear Mr. Henshaw. We’ll be working on comprehension and summary activities, along with research on occupations. Look for the Occupation Report and Budget Project rubrics to be coming home soon.

 

SS (4): “NC brochure” project addresses our grade level “Big Question”: “How does when and where we live affect how we live?”

 

LA (5): 5th grade summer reading was The Island of Blue Dolphins. During the next week and a half, students will work on two projects, one independent and one with a partner. Please refer to the Slide Show Partner Project expectation sheet.

 

SS (5): “My W.O.R.L.D.” project encompasses our grade level “Big Question”: “What is our world made of?” Students write an acrostic poem.

 

 

HMWK: (4 and 5) Gather photos, magazine pictures for mixed media collage in art. (4) SS Vocabulary. (5) Vocabulary Cartoons.

 

 

 

Thursday, Sept. 4

 

LA/SS (4): Work on text for brochure.

 

LA (5): Continue writing and editing slide show.

 

SS (5): Students extend their My W.O.R.L.D poems into paragraphs.

LA/SS (4): Edit brochure for final product stage.

Monday, Sept. 8

 

LA (4th) We will work on cursive handwriting, setting a goal for improvement throughout the year, as well as work on our Reading Response sheet for Dear Mr. Henshaw.

 

 

  • HMWK: study for our first vocabulary quiz on Thursday. Our first Daily Gram quiz will be postponed until next Tues. due to our speaker on Fri.

 

LA (5th) We will have a mini lesson on handwriting and continue working on our Island of Blue Dolphin group integrated project. Presentations of the final slide show will be Fri.

 

  • HMWK: study for our first vocabulary quiz on Thursday. Our first Daily Gram quiz will be postponed until next Tues. due to our speaker on Fri.

 

SS (4th) We will learn the five geographic themes and make webs of the physical features of each of the three regions of our state.

 

SS (5th) We will continue the My W.O.R.L.D. integrated project, researching at least 20 adjectives to add to the collage.

 

HMWK: Bring in magazines and photos to incorporate into the collage in art.

SS (5th) Speaker: Doug Meyer, anthropologist and historian, specializing in Native American primitive tools, weapons and fire making. He will demonstrate cord making from local plants, weapon and fire making, and he will take us on an interpreted hike around campus showing what Native Americans used for survival. Please wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and hiking! Students will make rope from plants! This workshop connects to the LA summer reading: Island of Blue Dolphins, as well as SS and Science content areas.
