Starting the College Discussion

Finding the best college to fit a student’s needs and wants can be overwhelming.  While many college application “tasks” are not required until late into the junior and senior years, freshmen and sophomores have a lot to think about in order to make the most of their high school experience.  Woodlawn encourages families to start this discussion as early as 9th grade. We hope this worksheet will aid students and parents in sharing their expectations for college and opening dialogue on the process. The form does not need to be turned in.

DISCUSSION POINT                                                                        RESPONSE

Do you plan on attending a two-year college, a four-year college, a military service academy, a junior college, a community college, a public or private college or university?

What size of academic institution would you prefer?  Do you want a large research university or a small liberal arts college?

What specific professional goals do you have in mind already (career path, graduate school, law school, medical school, engineering)?

What type of academic programs do you require in a college (foreign study, research opportunities, majors)?

What region of the country would you prefer?

Do you have other requirements such as single sex or religious affiliation?

What type of physical environment would you prefer (weather, proximity to home, rural, urban, or suburban school)?

What type of campus living arrangements would you prefer (all on campus housing, commuter school, prevalence of Greek or other group housing, etc.)?

What type of campus activities do you require?

What sports would you consider participation in at the collegiate level (or club level)?

What scholarships or financial aid do you have in mind?

Which, if any, colleges do you already have in mind?
