Janiesse Ray "Nature, Community, and the Life We Lead"
Please join us on Sunday, September 28 at 8:00 pm in the Lilly Family Gallery for a public lecture by Janisse Ray on “Nature, Community, and the Life We Dream.” Ray is a writer, naturalist, and environmental activist; her book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood was the orientation book for the class of 2012. She has won a Southeastern Booksellers Award, an American Book Award, the Southern Environmental Law Center 2000 Award for Outstanding Writing, and a Southern Book Critics Circle Award. Ecology of a Cracker Childhood was a New York Times Notable Book and was chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read.
This event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the departments of Economics, English, and History; by the VPAA and President’s offices; and by Physical Plant, the Sustainability Fellow, Engage for Change, the Community Service Office, and the Millner Fund for environmental programming.
Copies of Ray’s books will be available for purchase at the lecture, and Ms. Ray will be happy to sign them afterwards.

Ninth graders will focus their service efforts on studying environmental problems and designing service projects to bring solutions to the Woodlawn campus and surrounding community. To help kick off and inspire the design of their service projects, the ninth graders will spend three days at Longbranch Environmental Education Center just northwest of Asheville. Longbranch is both a working, organic farm and ecological sanctuary whose director has spent over 30 years teaching environmentally sustainable living practices. The ninth graders will tour the farm and its green buildings, help with farm work, participate in a sustainability seminar with the director, discuss Ishmael, explore the watershed that the farm property protects, and begin brainstorming ideas for their service Action Plans.

Over the break: Interested students are encouraged to make one Christmas ornament out of recycled materials to go on the tree on the Woodlawn float in the Christmas parade. Please bring ornament to Stinson Hall by December 4.
Examples: Use old aluminum foil to make a star or ball, cut 20 oz Mountain Dew bottles into a spiral "icicle", cover pine cones with peanut butter and birdseed, make "God's Eyes" using sticks and yarn scraps, fold old magazines or old (clean) food packaging into interesting shapes

9th Grade Student Art Exhibition @ McColl Center June 8 (Mon) 6:00 pm @ McColl Center for Visual Arts
The 9th graders have worked with UNCC Art Professor, Heather Freeman, to each produce a photo series depicting biological processes. While the photos depict abstract biological concepts, the subjects used to portray these concepts are objects from nature. Students have also extensively hand-altered their photos. This art and science project is funded by a grant from the Arts & Science Council.
