First Grade Visual Arts

Curriculum Map 

 

The first grade art curriculum reinforces basic art concepts, as well as, creative problem solving and collaborating skills.  Art projects in first grade help develop sensory and fine motor skills. The students also develop and build upon their creative voice as it applies to visual arts. We explore a variety of art techniques such as drawing, three dimensional artwork, ceramics, collage, mixed media, printmaking, painting, fiber, and art appreciation.

 

Guiding questions:

  • What is art?
  • What are organic shapes vs. geometric shapes? 
  • What does collaboration mean?
  • What does it mean to be creative?

 

Focus areas:

  • Multiple step projects
  • Using art materials correctly
  • Participates and demonstrates a positive attitude
  • Recognizes that mistakes can be turned into creative opportunities
  • Invents original imagery from both observation and imagination
