Computer Recommendations for Students

Recommended Computers for Students

Starting in 6th grade, students are required to bring their own laptops to school.  Any brand of laptop is acceptable, as long as it contains a wireless ("wi-fi" or 802.11) network interface and Microsoft Office.

Many times families ask us to recommend a specific laptop for a student - this is what we currently advise:

  • Apple MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with 13-inch display
  • Microsoft Office for the Mac - Student Edition
  • A thin sleeve to keep the laptop from getting damaged (no straps)

These laptops are very lightweight and durable. They come with 4 GB of RAM (memory) which is plenty for student use, and with the latest version of the Mac operating system (OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"). They also come with a built-in iSight camera and free software including Messages, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, and Safari (web browser).

There are Apple stores in both Northlake Mall and South Park Mall, as well as an Apple-authorized dealer at the Wooden Stone in Davidson.  There is also an Apple store online; you can also check the prices at online sites like amazon.com or macmall.com - they often feature rebates and/or free shipping on these products.
