10th Grade Service Opportunities

10th Graders are required to complete 10 hours of extracurricular service during the school year.

Students should make their best effort to work with organizations that serve immigrants/refugees, however service hours outside of this arena will still be accepted.  

 

POSSIBLE SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

 

1) Latin American Festival     http://festivallatinoamericano.org/

MUST SIGN UP ASAP

Volunteering for one shift at this year's event will guarantee you free entry into the festival, a t-shirt, and tons of fun throughout the day. Join our fantastic team of festival volunteers by signing up today.

2) Amigos de Cristo - This program tutors elementary age Latino kids in the Huntersville community. We use high school tutors.

Tutoring sessions are from 4:30-5:30 on Monday & Tuesday afternoons at Huntersville Presbyterian Church.

Tutors should arrive between 4:00 and 4:15 to help with set-up and to be prepared to begin tutoring at 4:30 sharp.

Tutors should plan to stay until 5:45 to help with clean-up.

All Tutors will be asked to attend a tutor training session on Monday, Sept. 26 -

regardless of their years of experience as tutors

The meeting with the Parents of children wanting to participate will be on Monday, Oct. 3.

The first tutoring session with tutors and children present will be on Monday, Oct. 10, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Volunteer to work with PreK kids in literacy and math. You have the option of choosing your own schedule.

This is a Spanish immersion class - so students need guidance in reading in Spanish.

 

4) Ada Jenkins Latino Support Services     212 Gamble Street in Davidson

All new volunteers are required to attend a New Volunteer Orientation program.

Orientations will be held at The Ada Jenkins Center from 5:30 – 7 pm on:

  • Monday, September 12
  • Monday, October 10
  • Monday, November 7

There is NO need to call or e-mail The Center to register for an orientation; please just attend the orientation that fits your schedule.

You will be required to fill out an application at the orientation. Please provide driver’s license information and three personal references.

One Example of Service:

After School Program (LEARN Works) – Tutors  
Daily 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday)
Must commit two afternoons per week, and at least 16 years old.

English Tutoring Program is a popular way to get involved. As a volunteer English tutor, you'll work one-on-one with a student that needs to improve his or her language skills. You'll meet once weekly at a time and place convenient to both of you. International House would provide your training. Click here to learn more about the ETP volunteer role and to sign up.
