This Week...  The final trimester!

Date
May 14th - 18th,  2012
Reading

Remember that your child should be reading their book every night to you.  Please return the book each day in the big ziploc bag.

What are some different tools that good readers use?  We hope to discover a few more of those this week!

Writing

The letter Ss is our focus this week.  Our poem is:

Slippery snake, slippery snake, s-s-s
(Make sliding movement with hands)

The high frequency words for this week:

We will be doing lots of center activities this week to support this learning, but I encourage you to work on these at home too. This is a great habit to get into as your child progresses to first grade. Remember that handwriting counts.  Letters are expected to be formed correctly on handwriting paper or they will be marked incorrect.

Social Studies

Community Helpers  will be our focus book as we dive deep into the people that contribute to our community.  We hope to hear from a few before the year is out!

Math

Measurement is a key concept in math.  We can measure time, length, width, weight, temperature, etc.  As we continue to explore different measurement techniques, we also learn how to be precise and accurate.  One minute or one centimeter can alter results.  We are beginning to practice measurement in its' many forms.

Don't forget to work on xtra math every day!

Science

Chickens remain our focus for the rest of the school year.  Thank you to the Zullman family for "chicken sitting" over the weekend.

This week, we will measure our smallest and biggest chickens again (Squeaker and Bandit) to track their growth.  We will also be learning how to care for the chickens.  How do you change their water?  What do we do with their food now?  Can they play in their new coop?  We will be investigating all of these questions and more this week!

Just so that you know, April and May are the "new" December of the crazy calendar!  So many things happen in the next two months.  The schedule is insane but the learning is still intense.  Thanks for being flexible and checking the class pages for important dates and information.  I promise that the schedule will change very often!

Important Information...

We are going to continue our exploration of the dictionary this week!  If you do not own a children's dictionary at home, now is the time to get one.  Dictionary skills help us learn ABC order, new vocabulary words, reading skills, and the list goes on!

Writing

The letter Qq is our focus this week.  Our poem is:

Quacking quacker, quacking quacker, qu-qu-qu
(Make a duck beak with one hand and make quacking motion)

This is a very difficult letter for Kindergarten kids.  It is easily confused with the Pp!  So, we spend a little extra time with this one.  Also, we have a marriage ceremony of the Q with the letter U.  Q never leaves U's side!  So, when we study this letter, we make a big deal to study "qu" together!

The high frequency words for this week:

Math

I am so excited to introduce a technology math program that your child can do at home as well as at school.  It is called xtramath.org

Please refer to the flyer that was sent home on Friday with your munchkin.  All you will need to do is register your child using the information provided.  Every day, I am hoping that each child will spend just a few minutes on this program.  It is amazing and the results are fabulous.  We will also be using this in class.  As your child becomes more confident, the skill level will rise.  Because I have never used this program before as a teacher, please give me feedback as to what you are hearing and seeing.  Of course, no stressing is EVER allowed!

Science

Well, I'm not sure what to say except the best laid plans rarely prepare us!  Thank you again and again for all of your support last week.  A HUGE thanks to Mrs. Zammit and Ms. Hoskins for tenderly caring every hour, on the hour, for our two survivors - Squeaky and Pecker.

With our 9 healthy and happy chickens, we will continue to study their life cycle. Chicks grow every hour.  It's amazing to watch their development.  If you are interested in caring for our new class pets over one weekend, let me know.

We will be creating a lemonade stand in our HouseKeeping center.  The children will be expected to use pretend money to buy and sell lemonade.  Can you donate some plastic cups?  Please send them in as soon as possible.  Thanks!

Can we find high frequency words in our reading?  We are going to connect the words that we have learned to spell to our actual reading texts to make this learning true and authentic.

Writing

Jj is the letter that we will study this week.  Just wait and see all of the justifiablyjewels that we come up with!   Also, we will continue our study of how to write a cinquain poem.  Our Valentine project is your child's biggest homework assignment in Kindergarten. Please get started on these if you haven't already!

Social Studies

As part of our patriot study in Kindergarten, we will be investigating Martin Luther King, Jr.  The book that we read last week was Happy Birthday Martin Luther King!   This was a great introduction to this amazing man that helped changed unfair laws in our country.  Be ready for some serious conversations about racism, inequality and the "I Have A Dream" speech.  I love this unit so much because kindergarten students have such a sense of justice.  Let's encourage them to keep this sense of social justice for a lifetime! We will begin writing cinquain poems about this amazing man.

Math

Equal parts and fractions are our focus this week.  How do we divide that brownie so that everyone gets their fair share?  I love how fractions and Martin Luther King link together so well!

Science Who knew that our class would become reptile experts?  Not me!  But our students are leading us in this direction.  Last week we discovered what a "herpetologist" is and the definition of a reptile.  This is going to be a fun project as we begin our study of reptiles.  Do you have any books about reptiles?  Please share with us.  Just put your name in the front cover so we don't get anyone's books mixed up.  Does anyone have a reptile pet at home that they would be willing to share with our class? There is nothing like seeing the real thing to bring about real learning!  Thanks!

Reading

We are going to review all of our strategies or "tools" that good readers use.  And we will add some more as we dive deeper into our Mo Williems author study.  We are also going to go back and revisit our hopes and dreams for Kindergarten that we wrote in the beginning of the year.  We are going to check in to see how we are progressing and maybe even create some new goals for the rest of the school year.

Writing

We are going to spend some time this week reviewing all of the letters and sounds we have learned so far.  Next, we are off to study the Letter Ii.  Not only is it a word but also a vowel!

We are taking the next step in our writing by understanding that letters make sounds and when we blend those sounds together, we can make words.  High frequency words are a challenge.  Many of them do not spell like they sound. We have to memorize different ways of spelling them.  We will do chants, songs, rhymes, and even stand on our head, to help children memorize these words over the next trimester!  Our goal, is that these words will be spelled correctly in our writing - the more we practice.

Social Studies

Continue to work on your home address and phone numbers with your child.  We will begin some mapping skills this week as we continue our study of who we are in the community.

Math

We will review numerals 0-7 and we will create our new January calendar!

Science There are many different types of animals.  Where do they live?  How do they survive in the winter months?  There are so many animal questions that we will be discovering over the next 13 weeks!

Reading

Environmental print is the first way that most children begin to recognize that print actually has meaning.  The golden arches means "McDonalds".  The red and white bulls eye symbol means "Target".  We will explore a lot of environmental print this month.  I encourage you to point out the signs you see as you are driving in the car. We will continue to read more stories by Tana Hoban and Mo Willems - our new authors for this trimester.

Writing

We are taking the next step in our writing by understanding that letters make sounds and when we blend those sounds together, we can make words.  High frequency words are a challenge.  Many of them do not spell like they sound. We have to memorize different ways of spelling them.  We will do chants, songs, rhymes, and even stand on our head, to help children memorize these words over the next trimester!  Our goal, is that these words will be spelled correctly in our writing - the more we practice.

We will also explore the letter "Ff" and the diagraph "ph"  Both make the same sounds but look so different!  We will also learn how to spell the high frequency word "and".

Social Studies

Where do we live?  Our study this trimester will take us to exploring our address and phone numbers.  It is time to show your child your house number and street name!  Be sure to point them out as you are driving down the road or grabbing the mail. Our goal over the next 13 weeks is to understand where other creatures live and how we are all connected.

Math

We will practice our handwriting with numerals 7 and 8.  We are also beginning our unit on shapes.  The Shape of Things by Dayle Ann Dodds is a great story that show children how to create beautiful pictures just by starting with a shape.  We'll read this one and many more!

Science There are many different types of animals.  Where do they live?  How do they survive in the winter months?  There are so many animal questions that we will be discovering over the next 13 weeks!

We will study this author as well as his writing techniques during this next trimester too.

Where do we live?  Our study this trimester will take us to exploring our address and phone numbers.  Our goal over the next 13 weeks is to understand where other creatures live and how we are all connected.

Math

Well, this week we will explore who guessed correctly when Baby Ava would actually arrive!  We are also diving into our study of patterns.

Science There are many different types of animals.  Where do they live?  How do they survive in the winter months?  There are so many animal questions that we will be discovering over the next 13 weeks!

Parade of Fiction

On Monday, October 31st, your child will get to dress up as their favorite character from a book that they have read.  This book can be one that you have read together not necessarily a book that they can read on their own.  Some examples:  A pig from If You Give A Pig A Pancake, or Jack from The Magic Treehouse series. Please try and refrain from the movie characters.  Woody, Superman, Princess Cinderella and Tinkerbell are wonderful characters but NOT what I am looking for.  Please don't feel that the costume should be elaborate.  Just simple pig ears will do! I would like your child to choose their book and bring it in to school as soon as possible.  Be sure to put your name on the inside of the book just in case it gets mixed in with the others.  I will inspect their choice and give them the OK to begin creating their costume. Costumes need to be created at home. We will be studying their chosen book and creating a project in class.  The Parade will begin at 8:20.  So if you can join us, please park your car and walk your child in.  Parents are encouraged to attend the festivities!  Afterwards, we will have a light yet yummy snack!  Your child will need a change of clothes for the rest of the day (sneakers too!).

September 19th - 23rd, 2011
Reading
We are going to introduce all sorts of books about the farm.  These will include books about farm equipment, animals, produce, etc.  We will begin with Apples fir Everyone and An Apple's Life.  Both of these are National Geographic books for kids.  The pictures are wonderful!  We will also begin reading about the 4 seasons in honor of the autumnal equinox which happens this Friday!
Writing

How do people write?  When did writing begin?  How should we sit and hold the pencil?  Is it okay to write words we don't know how to spell - YES!  These are the questions that we will explore for the next week.

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.  We will read The Apple Pie Tree. This story takes us around the world to show us where ingredients for an apple pie come from.
Math

Our author study continues with Chicka Chicka 1,2,3  We'll learn more position words like right and left, etc.  We'll continue to learn the proper formation of numerals. We'll also explore many math concepts using apples this week.

Science What has grown in our garden?  We will check out our sprouts and learn how to water! We planted lettuce and radish last week.  Thursday is our official gardening day but we might find ourselves out there more just to keep the water going.   How do apples grow?  What is the life cycle of an apple?  We will explore the apple trees on campus.

The children have promised...

When we care about each other and our classroom, we...

Share what we have, listen carefully, help each other learn.  We work hard, be happy and have fun together.  We will be kind to everyone - even visitors.  We forgive each other and do not remind people of their mistakes.  We don't tell secrets and we always let people play.  We understand that everyone makes mistakes.  We stand up for ourselves and others and when someone asks us to stop, we will stop.  This is who we are and what we promise to do, even when no one is watching.

These promises are very powerful and I am so proud of our class for coming up with them.

As the year progresses, I will hold them accountable for these promises.

A few reminders...

* Rest towels are sent home on Friday to be washed.  Please send them back to school on Monday.  Also, these towels and pillows need to fit in their cubby!

*  Two children needed a change of clothes this week and there were none in their backpack.  Remember to please put these extra clothes in a ziploc bag and keep them in their backpack.  This is so important.  Changes of clothes are not just for accidents.  Children are learning to open their own lunch items.  Spills happen a lot!  Falling down in the mud happens a lot!  Getting extremely wet while out in the garden happens a lot!  I think you get the idea.  Also, remember to switch out their clothes as the weather becomes more cool.

* Thank you for the t-shirt money!  We really appreciate it!

We will discuss our plans for the Kindergarten curriculum on Tuesday, Oct. 4th.  We had an original time set for after school but to accommodate all of the families that would need extra child care, we are searching for a time towards the end of school before your Kindergartner is dismissed.  I will keep you posted as to the exact time.  Sorry for the confusion!

*  We are going to Patterson Farms to go on a hayride and pick a real pumpkin!  Our date is Friday, October 14th at 8:45.  This means that everyone will need to arrive at school on this day by 7:30.  It will take about an hour to get out to the farm.    Our plan is to leave by 7:45 and return to school by 11:00.  We are all set for drivers.  Thanks for all of the volunteers!  Remember that you will need to leave your child's car seat with us that morning.

* We meet together every 6 weeks to conference about your child and the progress that he/she is making.  Because there are so many things to cover during the first conference - which is typically only 15 minutes - I would like to offer a 30 minute conference on Friday, October 7th.  This is a teacher workday and your child will not be in school.  If you will be in town and you are interested in this, please follow the survey monkey link  to sign up for a time.    http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/october434

*  No school Friday, October 7th or Monday, October 10th

*  Friday, October 21st is Woodlawn's Homecoming.  Read more about this awesome event in Woodlawn Notes this week.

*  Friday, October 28th -  Fall Festival.  This is a school wide event sponsored by the PX Committee.  This is a great way to volunteer, meet some families, and have fun!  Contact the PX Committee if you would like to help!

*  Monday, October 31st - Parade of Fiction  A hard copy of the below information went home on Friday.  We haven't discussed this yet in class but plan to this week!

This Week...  You thought the second week was great...!

Date
September 12th - 16th, 2011
Reading
We will continue to read many back to school stories this week.  Our author study will begin with Lois Ehlert's  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Writing

What are our personal Hopes and Dreams for Kindergarten?  We will actually write and illustrate about them this week.  These will be posted in our room all year long. Also, we will explore writing.  How do people write?  When did writing begin?  How should we sit and hold the pencil?  Is it okay to write words we don't know how to spell - YES!  These are the questions that we will explore for the next two weeks.

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.
Math
What is a mathematician?  We discover our math tubs.  We will learn how to use our math materials appropriately, study the calendar, and begin working on how to form our numerals properly.  Our author study continues with Chicka Chicka 1,2,3
Science What has grown in our garden?  We will check out our sprouts and learn how to water! We planted lettuce and radish last week.  Thursday is our official gardening day but we might find ourselves out there more just to keep the water going.

Hopefully, everyone saw the "Promise Contract" that was sent home Friday.  Please make this a priority in your family. Keep a copy on your Fridge and visit it daily before school.

Everyone should turn in their signed contract on Monday.

Please... down comforters are not needed.

* Hot lunch starts this week.  If you signed up for this, please continue to send in a healthy snack and water bottle every day.

* Does your child go to after school?  Please let me know which days and be sure to send in a marked afternoon snack for your child.  I will be sure that your child doesn't eat it too early!

Important Information...

*  Kindergarten Curriculum Day

We will discuss our plans for the Kindergarten curriculum on Tuesday, Oct. 4th at 3:15 - 4:15.  After school care will be available.  This is a "parent-only" meeting.  Let me know if your child will be attending after care on this day.

*  We are going to Patterson Farms to go on a hayride and pick a real pumpkin!  Our date is Friday, October 14th at 8:45.  This means that everyone will need to arrive at school on this day by 7:30.  It will take about an hour to get out to the farm.  Please let me know if you are available to drive that day.  Our plan is to leave by 7:45 and return to school by 11:00.  If you or a younger child plan on attending, you will need to pay your own way.  The fee is $8.00 per person.  You will need to pay Nancy - in the office - ahead of time.

If you will be in town and you are interested in this, please email me and I will schedule a time convenient for you during that time.  If you don't know already, I love to chat and share stories about your child.  15 minutes is just too brief for me.  If you will be out of town for this long weekend, you will need to walk into Nancy's office to schedule our time together during the kids special areas.  This sign-up sheet won't be available for at least two more weeks.  I will let you know.

This Week...  You thought the first week was great...!

Date
September 5th - 9th, 2011
Reading
We will continue to read many back to school stories this week.  Our author study will begin with Lois Ehlert's  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Writing
We are going to practice writing our name.  There will be a new sign-in sheet added to our morning routine!
Social Studies
This is the week that we will discover our hopes and dreams for Kindergarten.  What do we want to learn more than anything and how we will accomplish these dreams? Each year is different.  The children will be creating their  "Promises" which are basically the same as our class rules. I will send home a copy of our promises for you and your child to sign - just like a contract.  Because the children create these promises, it gives them ownership over our class.  It helps them respect the classroom environment in ways that I could never come up with on my own!
Math
What is a mathematician?  We discover our math tubs.  We learn how to use our math materials appropriately and we will learn all about the calendar this week!
Science Our first day in the garden with Mrs. Denham, our garden coordinator and 6th grade science teacher,  will be this Thursday!

The first week of school was absolutely amazing! Our class worked closely with the 6th graders ( and three 8th graders) to develop our service plan.  We read a wonderful story entitled Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan.  We all can leave invisible "heartprints" over each other's head that encourage love and positive growth. This will lead beautifully into our community service project at the new Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte.   We worked with our middle school "buddies"  to learn about the garden using our 5 senses.  We learned a new song from Ms. Donna, our amazing music teacher, about the core values at Woodlawn.  If that weren't enough, we had a guided tour of the East Trail through the woods at Woodlawn School by none other than Mr. Bowman, our school's founder.  Hopefully you heard all about it! Here are three links for you to watch:

Our goals for the first two weeks of school are:

1. We will learn each others' names and be able to name some interests and out-of-school activities or experiences for each member of our class.

2.  We will all learn the basic expectations for and will successfully perform basic routines during the school day - with close teacher supervision!

3.  We will name and share our hopes and dreams for the school year.

4.  We will generate ideas and procedures for using basic tools and materials for reading, math, art, science, social studies, recess, and writing and will explore their use further in open-ended activity times.

5.  Each child will present his/her work to the group at least 2 or 3 times.  Please know that shy children will be encouraged but not forced to share.

6.  Children's art, writing, and personal artifacts will be displayed around the room.

Please know that the first two weeks of school is a time to help children see their school as a place where they belong and where they know and can meet expectations.  They need to feel comfortable and supported, excited and challenged.  New songs are learned, new friendships are made and the air of our class will hold their voices that will in turn offer hope and fresh ideas!  What an exciting and powerful time! I am so excited to be a part of their journey!
