Now we are off to learning about the chicken life cycle!  We will read tons of books that will hopefully answer our questions about how a chicken is born!

Please do not forget to use the RazKids.com website to continue practicing those reading skills and strategies.

Writing

Marvelous Me...who will it be? You will have to wait and see!

We are learning to use the pencils without the grips.  Be sure to check your child at home to ensure proper grip.  This includes using crayons, pens, and markers too!

When do we use a capital letter?  We have learned 3 ways so far.

1.  The beginning of a sentence

2.  The word "I"

3.  Days of the week and months of the year

We will continue to study this as we write in our journals.

Social Studies

Uncle Malcolm is Isabelle's uncle and a sheriff too.  He will be speaking to us about what it is like to be a police officer.

Math

Our math strategies now include adding 1, using fingers and toes, adding on and using a number line.  It is an exciting time as we learn the new language of mathematics!

Science

Oviparous animals continue to be our study as we FINALLY received our chicken eggs in the mail.  Incubation began on Friday, April 12th which means that we are hoping for a hatch date of May 2nd or 3rd!  It is sure to be an "eggs-citing" time!

We will candle our eggs this week and see how many of our eggs are actually growing chickens!

Reading

Reading strategies help us become more confident and eventual fluent readers.  When children use these resources to solve the mystery of reading, that is exactly what happens!  It is exciting to watch!  Don't give your child the solution immediately when you are reading together.  Make your child think...

Did I look at the picture?  Did I get my mouth ready for the first sound?  Did I pay attention to how that word ends?  Does that make sense?  Am I using my reading finger?

Writing

Be sure to ask your child about Marvelous Me!  I love this project in kindergarten.  Each week, I choose one child to be the Marvelous Me.  We interview this child and then each one of us writes about what we have learned about our friend.  We put all of the pages together and send it home for you to keep.  I hope you will treasure this and bring it back out at high school graduation!  This week, our Marvelous Me will be Declan! Again!  Because of the snow day, we missed out on this project.

This month we will really grow as readers.  I will be teaching your child many strategies to help them become more fluent and enjoy the independence of being able to read a book all by themselves!  Everyone has signed into Raz Kids.  I have received a ton of great feedback.  Remember that your child should read at least 3 different stories and get 3 checkmarks for each.  So far, that has not been a problem! I'm thrilled with the progress your child is making!  Keep up the great work.

Writing

We almost finished the letter Kk this week.  So we will continue our study next week as well.

Social Studies

We did an amazing experiment last Friday involving Martin Luther King, Jr.  I hope that your children shared this with you.  We separated the blue eyed kids from the brown eyed kids.  The blue eyed kids had to sit and watch the brown eyed kids play in free centers.  There were some very intense emotions from both sides.  I have taught this lesson every year and I have found that it makes a lasting impression.  It's not fun to be the one being discriminated against.  We will continue to learn about this amazing patriot this week.

Math

We are continuing to practice how to read and recognize number words.  Also, we are going to learn about the greater than and less than symbol.  The chompy mouth always gobbles up the larger number.  The kids really enjoy making their own chompy mouths out of popsicle sticks to use in centers.

Science

Do you have some books about bears?  They can be fiction (Goldilocks!) or nonfiction.  Please send them in so we can continue our amazing study of bears!

We have a real Park Ranger coming to visit this Friday!  Hopefully we will get a lot of our questions about bears answered!

Date
December 10th - 14th, 2012
Reading

We will continue exploring books by Mo Willems.  His books are hilarious, poignant and teach high frequency words!   This week we will read Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late, and I will introduce two new characters...Elephant and Piggie!

Also, we are learning some great strategies that all good readers need to use.  So far, we have studied:  Look at the pictures and find the words on the page.  We will be learning a cool new song called The Tools of Good Readers this week too!

Writing

We are taking the next step in our writing by understanding that letters make sounds and when we blend those sounds together, we can make words.  High frequency words are a challenge.  Many of them do not spell like they sound. We have to memorize different ways of spelling them.  We will do chants, songs, rhymes, and even stand on our head, to help children memorize these words over the next trimester!  Our goal, is that these words will be spelled correctly in our writing - the more we practice.  In addition to the and and, we will add this week,me and my.

Social Studies

Where do we live?  Our study this trimester will take us to exploring our address and phone numbers.  Our goal over the next 13 weeks is to understand where other creatures live and how we are all connected.

Math

Numeral 9!  We will study how to form this numeral as well as review 0-8.  From this point on, the correct number formations in handwriting are expected.  If your child is still struggling with this, please spend some time practicing at home.

Science There are many different types of animals.  Where do they live?  How do they survive in the winter months?  There are so many animal questions that we will be discovering over the next 13 weeks!  We are off to study the world of...BEARS!

Important Information...

In case you haven't heard, ABeeC's is going to take a break for this trimester.  We have a new animal that will spend the weekend with you...PIGEON!!  The expectations are a bit different for writing in the journal.  Please be sure to read the instructions included.  Your child will be expected to do the writing this trimester.  Please do not wait until late Sunday evening to complete this project.  We don't want any tears or frustration.

Environmental print is the first way that most children begin to recognize that print actually has meaning.  The golden arches means "McDonalds".  The red and white bulls eye symbol means "Target".  We will explore a lot of environmental print this month.  I encourage you to point out the signs you see as you are driving in the car. Mo Williems is one of the writers for Sesame Street.  His books are hilarious, poignant and teach high frequency words! We will study this author as well as his writing techniques during this next trimester too.  This week we will read Knuffle Bunny, a story about a child, Trixie, who loses her lovey at the laundry mat.  Ms. Royce, our art teacher, is going to incorporate this book in her art lessons.

Important Information...

Morning/Afternoon Drop Off Information

Mrs. Zammit is no longer a part of the morning drop off.  Other teachers now fill that role.  Please encourage your child to be ready to go when you pull up to school.  They now need to be responsible for getting out of the car, grabbing their belongings, and making the journey to our classroom door.  This is actually a graded skill on their report card!  The first trimester, we only want your child to separate from you without crying.  But now that we are into the 2nd trimester, the expectations are higher.  We cannot leave our classroom door open because we are wasting so much energy on heat.  Our students will learn to help each other daily to open the door and then continue to the normal routine.  Thank you for understanding and encouraging your child to be independent.  One more plea, please deliver your amazing package to our door by 8:00.  It is so hard for those children who technically are not tardy but barely have a chance to unpack before school actually begins.

Afternoon pick up for K-1 is exactly at 3:00 p.m.  If you have older children, you must grab your K-1 student first and then get back in the carpool line for your 2-12 kids.  This honestly is a non-negotiable.  If you are running late, please park in the gravel lot and walk up for your child.  Please email me if this is a hardship.  We can work something out.

Writing

How do people write?  When did writing begin?  How should we sit and hold the pencil?  Is it okay to write words we don't know how to spell - YES!  We will continue to explore the writing process.  The most important thing that we can do for our children is encourage them to write - WITHOUT worrying about spelling, grammar or proper phonics.  We want to take the fear out of writing.  Once they realize that mistakes are not only expected but ENCOURAGED, the spelling, the grammar and the phonics can be taught.  Please support me with this at home!

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.  We will read The Apple Pie Tree. This story takes us around the world to show us where ingredients for an apple pie come from.
Math

Our author study continues with Chicka Chicka 1,2,3  We'll learn more position words like right and left, etc.  We'll continue to learn the proper formation of numerals. We'll also explore many math concepts using apples this week.

The children have promised...

When we care about each other and our classroom, we...

Share what we have, listen carefully, help each other learn.  We work hard, be happy and have fun together.  We will be kind to everyone - even visitors.  We forgive each other and do not remind people of their mistakes.  We don't tell secrets and we always let people play.  We understand that everyone makes mistakes.  We stand up for ourselves and others and when someone asks us to stop, we will stop.  This is who we are and what we promise to do, even when no one is watching.

These promises are very powerful and I am so proud of our class for coming up with them.

As the year progresses, I will hold them accountable for these promises.  Remember to hang the promises in a special spot where you and your child can see them.  Be sure to go over them before school.  Thank you for signing the contract!

A few reminders...

* Rest towels are sent home on Friday to be washed.  Please send them back to school on Monday.  Also, these towels and pillows need to fit in their cubby!

*  Two children needed a change of clothes this week and there were none in their backpack.  Remember to please put these extra clothes in a ziploc bag and keep them in their backpack.  This is so important.  Changes of clothes are not just for accidents.  Children are learning to open their own lunch items.  Spills happen a lot!  Falling down in the mud happens a lot!  Getting extremely wet while out in the garden happens a lot!  I think you get the idea.  Also, remember to switch out their clothes as the weather becomes more cool.

Important Information...

*  We are going to Patterson Farms to go on a hayride and pick a real pumpkin!  Our date is Thursday, October 18th at 8:45.  This means that everyone will need to arrive at school on this day by 7:30.  It will take about 40 minutes to get out to the farm.    Our plan is to leave by 7:45 and return to school by 11:00.  We are all set for drivers.  Thanks for all of the volunteers!  Remember that you will need to leave your child's car seat with us that morning.

* We meet together every mid-trimester to conference about your child and the progress that he/she is making.  Because there are so many things to cover during the first conference - which is typically only 15 minutes - I will be offering a 30 minute conference on Friday, October 5th.  This is a teacher workday and your child will not be in school.     A sign up sheet will be sent out soon

*  No school Friday, October 5th or Monday, October 8th

*  Friday, October 21st is Woodlawn's Homecoming.  Read more about this awesome event in Woodlawn Notes this week.

So far the children have promised...

When we care about each other and our classroom, we...

Each year is different.  The children will be creating their  "Promises" which are basically the same as our class rules. I will send home a copy of our promises for you and your child to sign - just like a contract.  Because the children create these promises, it gives them ownership over our class.  It helps them respect the classroom environment in ways that I could never come up with on my own!
Math
What is a mathematician?  We discover our math tubs.  We learn how to use our math materials appropriately and we will learn all about the calendar this week!
Science We will go in the garden with Mrs. Denham, our garden coordinator to check on the seeds that we planted last week.  Hopefully, we will have some sprouts!  We will also learn how to water our garden plot!  Always fun!

The first week of school was absolutely amazing!  We read a wonderful story entitled Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan.  We all can leave invisible "heartprints" over each other's head that encourage love and positive growth. This will lead beautifully into our community service project at the new Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte.   We worked with our middle school "buddies"  to learn about the games and centers in our classroom.  We learned a new song from Ms. Donna, our amazing music teacher, about the core values at Woodlawn.  We presented our song to the lower and middle school kids last Friday. Hopefully you heard all about it! We ended the week with Woodlawn Day and fun was had especially with our Upper School "buddies"!  The seniors and the kindergarten kids have a special place at Woodlawn - being that we are the youngest and they are the oldest. We had a super time getting to know them and experiencing some of their classes!

Our goals for the first two weeks of school are:

1. We will learn each others' names and be able to name some interests and out-of-school activities or experiences for each member of our class.

2.  We will all learn the basic expectations for and will successfully perform basic routines during the school day - with close teacher supervision!

3.  We will name and share our hopes and dreams for the school year.

4.  We will generate ideas and procedures for using basic tools and materials for reading, math, art, science, social studies, recess, and writing and will explore their use further in open-ended activity times.

5.  Each child will present his/her work to the group at least 2 or 3 times.  Please know that shy children will be encouraged but not forced to share.

6.  Children's art, writing, and personal artifacts will be displayed around the room.

Please know that the first two weeks of school is a time to help children see their school as a place where they belong and where they know and can meet expectations.  They need to feel comfortable and supported, excited and challenged.  New songs are learned, new friendships are made and the air of our class will hold their voices that will in turn offer hope and fresh ideas!  What an exciting and powerful time! I am so excited to be a part of their journey!  Let the learning begin!
