AasA -- Selecting The Right Site.  Key points:

1. Exact location (within a 20 mile radius)

2. Local/environmental issues: Is it in or near sensitive habitats?  What is the local topography?  Identify at least two examples of flora and fauna native to your area.  How is the building of your facility going to affect the local wildlife?

3. Transportation considerations: Is there public transportation?  What are the routes to your facility?  What can you do to minimize the carbon footprint associated with getting to your facility?

4. Building/Footprint: How does form relate to function?  What is the rationale behind your creative design?  Are there any environmental benefits to the building itself?

5. Land/Acreage: What are you going to do with your 'yard' to help the local environment (*Note: consider what organisms you may have displaced in question #2)

Friday

AasA -- Material Wealth & Minimal Energy Use.  Key points:

  1. Identify at least 3 local materials that you are going to use to make your dwelling.
  2. Identify at least 3 things that you are going to pass on b/c it's not as environmentally friendly and/or cost effective.
  3. Identify at least 3 things that you are going to use WITHIN your dwelling (not related to bricks and mortar like in item #1) that will save energy.

AasA -- Breathing Easy and Water Wise.  Key points:

  1. From where are you getting your water and how are you making it potable?
  2. Have you considered low-flow water features or collecting rainwater?  If so, how/where are you going to incorporate it into your dwelling?
  3. The EPA estimates that indoor air can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from some paints, carpets, synthetic fabrics and adhesives are a known health hazard, contributing to the malaise known as sick building syndrome.  What are you going to do to address this potential hazard  in your dwelling?

Read and write a 2 paragraph summary of the following: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124050414436548553.html.  We'll discuss as a class.
