This Week. The final week of Kindergarten...

This week we are going to enjoy your children to the absolute fullest!  We will begin preparing for our Graduation ceremony as well as complete our end of year assessments.

We will attempt to finish the alphabet look books and complete our final 4 Marvelous Me writing projects.

We are still working diligently in our math books to round out our unit on money.

One quick note, even though we are approaching the end of school and everyone is beginning to get a bit worn out... these final days are critical and we really do not want your child to miss a single moment!  Please be sure to have your child attend every single day for the rest of the school year.  Honestly, I would be so sad if anyone had to leave early or sleep in late.  We are in crunch time now but also in the most magical time now.  Please be considerate to this request.

As we gather to a close of this incredible journey, Mrs. Zammit and I want you to know that we now consider your family one of our own.  We are so deeply grateful for the opportunity to teach your precious child this year.  Every moment is a blessing and one that we will both treasure for a lifetime.

So, with so much emotion and love, let's enjoy our final full week together!

A big part of the last two weeks of school is getting ready for our Kinderarten graduation.  We have learned so much together this year.  We will go back and revisit some of our favorite things.  It's hard to pick just one!  We will also get ready for our graduation ceremony on June 3rd.

Math

We are almost at the end of our kindergarten  math study.  There is one last concept that needs to be taught.  SHOW ME THE MONEY!  Now is the time to get out that piggy bank and explore the different coins and their values.  In addition to money, we will explore more in depth calendar patterns, addition and subtraction stories.

Science The chickens continue to grow and grow!  Thank you to everyone that has "chicken sat" so far.  What an amazing experience for our students!  If you would like to have a night to chicken sit during the week, please let me know asap.  I want everyone to get a chance before the end of school if you desire.

Reading

We are going to read more about spring, chickens and the weather.  Sometimes kids get a little worried about the thunderstorms that happen more this time of year.  We will brain storm some ideas to help us when we get nervous.  A great story, Just a Thunderstorm  is a little critter book and puts a funny spin on our fear.

Writing

We got a little off track because of the fabulous wedding, field day, and oviparous hunt from last week!  So, we will learn how to spell the word you.  We will also practice the letter Rr.  Our chant:

roaring robot

roaring robot

r-r-r  (move arms like a robot)

The kids did a GREAT job with their first ever spell check last week!  So, we're going to do it again!  Keep up the awesome work!

Words this week:  and, like, is

We will make a few phone calls to the NC Raptor Center and an aviary vet to hopefully get some advice on how to help him.  But the other 5 chicks are doing great!  Be ready for some potential difficult conversations at home if Lefty doesn't make it.  Sorry!

Important information:

We had a fabulous trip to Patterson Farm.  I was so impressed with how much knowledge our children had of all the different farm animals.  We are so smart!

Wednesday, April 30th - We are off to see the Bear Movie in Birkdale.  We are all set for drivers.  But don't hesitate to meet us there.  Look for a detailed email from Mrs. Lolla soon.

Friday, May 2nd - Lower School Talent Show.  A link to the schedule of acts was in Woodlawn Notes if you are interested.

First grade is raising money for their service project.  Please send in any extra coins for their Coins for Canines project.

Mackenzie Lortch, a Woodlawn senior, is raising money for her capstone turtle project. $25 can adopt and rescue a turtle!  We have $10 so far!  1/2 a turtle!

This week we will also begin an official word study complete with a small quiz.

Handwriting skills will also be assessed meaning that even if your child spells the word correctly but the letter formation is wrong, he will be marked incorrect.

I am trying to prepare them for first grade by letting them experience how to take a quiz, how to number a page, study skills, etc.  before it really counts!

Our author study is Eric Carle.  He continues to be an amazing influence in children's literature.  We will study his background and his works over the next  2 months.   This week we will read The Very Hungry Caterpillar.    We might even get to meet a real caterpillar!

Writing

This week, we will attend the wedding of two very special letters.  Q and U are going to be wed.  This is always a special time because we learn that their relationship is strong and they will always be next to each other!

The Marvelous Me will be Megan this week!

Our new sight word that we are learning to spell is you.

Social Studies

Who are the Community Helpers that make life easier for us every day?  We have already explored a few like the dentist and fire fighter.  We will go into more depth about the people in our neighborhood that help us out!

Math

We will study the April calendar this week.  Also, we will discover words such as: fewer than, how many in all, next to, behind, before, after and lots of other size and position words.  Hopefully, we will also get to a numeral review of 0-20.

Science The incubator is up and running.  We have a constant temperature of 99.5.  We have learned about adding water to keep the humidity correct.  And now we have...EGGS! We started incubation on Wednesday, April 2nd.  Hatch Day should be on Wednesday, April 23rd!  We will begin working in our chicken journals and recording any changes in our eggs.  We will also make some predictions about how many eggs will hatch?  Which one will come first?  There are so many things yet to discover before we become chicken "parents"!

Social Studies

Who are the Community Helpers that make life easier for us every day?  We have already explored a few like the dentist and fire fighter.  We will go into more depth about the people in our neighborhood that help us out!

Math

We are learning to add 1 more and to take 1 away from a number.  We will also begin to learn the math strategy of counting on.  For example, instead of counting the 5 fingers on our hand every time, we will start with 5 and then add the next number.

Science The incubator is up and running.  We have a constant temperature of 99.5.  We have learned about adding water to keep the humidity correct.  Now all we need?  EGGS!  We hope to start the incubation period this Wednesday.  It takes 21 days to hatch a chicken.  That puts us at Wednesday, April 30th as HATCH DAY!

Each week, we will work on a project with a Raz-Kids book that your child has read at  home.  We also work with the iPads to log in and read here at school.  We are keeping a collection of "just right" books for each child in their language arts bucket. They can go back and revisit these stories to enjoy!

Writing

We are not going to study a letter this week.  But we will continue to practice handwriting skills by reviewing A-L over the week.

Have you heard about Marvelous Me?  Be sure to ask your child! This week we will study James Kash!

In phonics, we will be working with blends including -st, -sp, -sl, -sh

We will study these not just at the beginning of words, but throughout the word.  See how many you can think of at home!

This Week.Happy New Year! 2014!

Date
January 27th-31st, 2014
Reading

This month we will really grow as readers.  I will be teaching your child many strategies to help them become more fluent and enjoy the independence of being able to read a book all by themselves!  Everyone has signed into Raz Kids.  I have received a ton of great feedback.  Remember that your child should read at least 3 different stories and get 3 checkmarks for each.  So far, that has not been a problem! I'm thrilled with the progress your child is making!  Keep up the great work.

Writing

We will study the letter Ll this week.

Our chant:

Leaping Lizard

Leaping Lizard

L-L-L

Have you heard about Marvelous Me?  Be sure to ask your child! This week we will study Megan Campbell!

We are studying the short vowels.  We will practice hearing the sounds of CVC words. That means consonant-vowel-consonant words.  In centers, we will search for picture cards that have these CVC patterns.  Your child will need to write the correct spelling for each word.

An at home idea?  Go over the short vowel sounds with your child.  We will be focusing on these skills over the next few weeks.

Social Studies

This week, we will finish up our writing about Dr. Martin Luther King.  I love the things that your children have learned from this incredible man!  They will definitely change the world to make it even less discriminatory in the future!

Math

We will practice how to read and recognize number words.  Also, we are going to learn about the greater than and less than symbol.  The chompy mouth always gobbles up the larger number.  The kids really enjoy making their own chompy mouths out of popsicle sticks to use in centers. We were able to scoot ahead with our numeral formation studies.  Your child should now be able to write the numerals 0-9 without any errors.

Science We are beginning Phase 2 of our study of bees.  We came up with tons of questions that we will discover the answers to.  We also began learning our new rap song called Do the HoneyBee. It's hilarious!  But the words really help teach people about this amazing insect!

Social Studies

This week we will be running an experiment based on Martin Luther King Jr's dream. Some children will be discriminated against.  Please know that we are only "acting" but your child might be very sad after this lesson.  My hope is that you all have wonderful conversations at home about the work of MLK and racism even today.  It's a very powerful lesson.  There are usually lots of tears.  But I hope it's something that is life changing for your child.

Our long term goal is to study the life cycle of a bee.  Do you know any bee keepers? Or do you have any books about bees?  Please let us borrow them for the semester!

Date
November 18 - 22nd, 2013
Reading Some parents feel like they should cover up the picture when they are helping their child learn to read.  No!  Looking at the picture is the first and probably most important strategy that kids use when learning how to read!  Also, as you are reading to your child, use your finger to "underline" the words.  This is another strategy that your child is learning.  You can be a good role model for this!

Dear Parents,

For the past few weeks in life skills class, we have been talking about a few different feelings:  being scared, being embarrassed,

being shy, and being brave.  Our culminating activity was to create some Super Hero "pillow"capes to help us be more brave whenever

we need to leap over tall buildings in a single bound or to just simply get up on stage and perform a song.  Thank you all for sending

in the pillow cases for this project, and thank you to Mrs. Datta for sewing on the velcro for easy on and off access to our capes.

The children really wanted to take them home today to show you.  My only request is that you send them back to school after the

Thanksgiving break as we will use them at the Ronald McDonald House during our next visit.  Please send them to school with your

child no later than Friday, December 6th.  Enjoy!!

Thank you all,

Mrs. Lolla

We are still exploring all about our names.  We are continuing to learn how to write without spelling the words correctly.  The only thing that we want your child to do is hear the sounds.  Some children can only hear the first sound.  That is ok!  Our hope is to teach our students to hear sounds with each syllable.

We are also on the letter Cc.  We learn the sign language, how to form it correctly, and a chant to go along with the sound.  Be sure to ask your child about A and B!

Social Studies
Our patriot study this month is Christopher Columbus.  We will begin to look at his life and how he turned a mistake (landing on the wrong continent!) into an awesome opportunity!
Math

We will continue work on our numeral formations.  We also began a great calendar unit.  Please look at the calendar that your child brought home.  You can ask great questions like ...How many more days until Saturday?  What was the date two days ago?  How many Wednesdays are in this month?

Science We are off to Phase 2!  What a great trip to the Pumpkin Patch we had!  Over the next few weeks we will learn everything there is to know about a pumpkin and more!!  It is going to be awesome!

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.  We will continue to work on our community and the promises that we have made.
Math

We began last week in our math books.  We practiced writing the numerals, 1, 2, and 3.   This week we will continue our study of the numeral 4.  If your child is still making these numerals backwards, please work on this at home.  Need ideas?  Please email me!

Science Phase 1 of our first project will begin this week.  We will learn all about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  We hope to learn a bunch before our first field trip this Friday, where we will learn everything we need to know about a pumpkin.

Important Information...

*  We are going to Patterson Farms to go on a hayride and pick a real pumpkin!  Our date is Friday, October 4th at 8:45.  This means that everyone will need to arrive at school on this day by 7:30.  It will take about 40 minutes to get out to the farm.    Our plan is to leave by 7:45 and return to school by 12:30.   Remember that you will need to leave your child's car seat with us that morning.

Due this week - the book your child would like to study for the Parade of Books.  Please send it to school before Friday for approval.

*  Thursday, October 31st - Parade of Fiction  Please Join us for the parade and munchies afterward!

Parade of Books

On Thursday, October 31st, your child will get to dress up as their favorite character from a book that they have read.  This book can be one that you have read together not necessarily a book that they can read on their own.  Some examples:  A pig from If You Give A Pig A Pancake, or Jack from The Magic Treehouse series. Please NO  movie characters.  Woody, Superman, Princess Cinderella and Tinkerbell are wonderful characters but NOT what I am looking for.  Please don't feel that the costume should be elaborate.  Just simple pig ears will do! I would like your child to choose their book and bring it in to school as soon as possible.  Be sure to put your name on the inside of the book just in case it gets mixed in with the others.  I will inspect their choice and give them the OK to begin creating their costume. Costumes need to be created at home. We will be studying their chosen book and creating a project in class.  The Parade will begin at 8:30.  So if you can join us, please park your car and walk your child in.  Parents are encouraged to attend the festivities!  Afterwards, we will have a light yet yummy snack!  Your child will need a change of clothes for the rest of the day (sneakers too!).

This Week...  A new season begins...

Date
September 23rd - 27th, 2013

Writing

We are still exploring all about our names.  We created a graph last week that shows we have a combined total of  64 letters in all of our names.  We will work on our Who Am I riddles and continue to explore the proper way to write our names.

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.  We will read The Apple Pie Tree. This story takes us around the world to show us where ingredients for an apple pie come from.

This Week...  A new season begins...

A quick note - Thank you for all of your well wishes!  I'm on the mend and anxious to get back into the classroom!  We have a bit of catching up to do from last week but hopefully we will get back on track. A big thanks to Mrs. Zammit for holding down the fort!

Date
September 16th-20th, 2013
Reading
We are going to introduce all sorts of books about the farm.  These will include books about farm equipment, animals, produce, etc.  We will begin with Apples for Everyone and An Apple's Life.  Both of these are National Geographic books for kids.  The pictures are wonderful!  We will also begin reading about the 4 seasons in honor of the autumnal equinox which happens this Saturday!
Writing

How do people write?  When did writing begin?  How should we sit and hold the pencil?  Is it okay to write words we don't know how to spell - YES!  We will continue to explore the writing process.  The most important thing that we can do for our children is encourage them to write - WITHOUT worrying about spelling, grammar or proper phonics.  We want to take the fear out of writing.  Once they realize that mistakes are not only expected but ENCOURAGED, the spelling, the grammar and the phonics can be taught.  Please support me with this at home!

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.  We will read The Apple Pie Tree. This story takes us around the world to show us where ingredients for an apple pie come from.
Math

Our author study continues with Chicka Chicka 1,2,3  We'll learn more position words like right and left, etc.  We'll continue to learn the proper formation of numerals. We'll also explore many math concepts using apples for the next 2 weeks.

Science What has grown in our garden?  We will check out our sprouts and learn how to water! We planted lettuce and radish last week.   How do apples grow?  What is the life cycle of an apple?  We will explore the apple trees on campus.

The children have promised...

When we care about each other and our classroom, we...

Share what we have, listen carefully, help each other learn.  We work hard, be happy and have fun together.  We will be kind to everyone - even visitors.  We forgive each other and do not remind people of their mistakes.  We don't tell secrets and we always let people play.  We understand that everyone makes mistakes.  We stand up for ourselves and others and when someone asks us to stop, we will stop.  This is who we are and what we promise to do, even when no one is watching.

These promises are very powerful and I am so proud of our class for coming up with them.

As the year progresses, I will hold them accountable for these promises.  Remember to hang the promises in a special spot where you and your child can see them.  Be sure to go over them before school.  Thank you for signing the contract!

This Week...  You thought the second week was great...!

Date
September 9th - 13th, 2013
Reading
We will continue to read many back to school stories this week.  Our author study will begin with Lois Ehlert's  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Writing

We will explore writing.  How do people write?  When did writing begin?  How should we sit and hold the pencil?  Is it okay to write words we don't know how to spell - YES!  These are the questions that we will explore for the next two weeks.

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.
Math
What is a mathematician?  We discover our math tubs.  We will learn how to use our math materials appropriately, study the calendar, and begin working on how to form our numerals properly.  Our author study continues with Chicka Chicka 1,2,3
Science What has grown in our garden?  We will check out our sprouts and learn how to water! We planted lettuce and radish last week.    And I hope you are all enjoying your own radish plant at home.  This week, we will also conduct our first science experiment with...a coconut!

We have been working hard on creating our classroom promises.  The promises or our rules for the year, are created each year by our students.  They vary year to year depending on the class.  We will finalize them this week and I will send home a contract for you and your child to sign.  These will be our promises for the entire school year.

So far the children have promised...

A few reminders...

* Rest towels are sent home on Friday to be washed.  Please send them back to school on Monday.  Also, these towels and pillows need to fit in their cubby!  Please... down comforters are not needed.

* Does your child go to after school?  Please let me know which days and be sure to send in a marked afternoon snack for your child.  I will be sure that your child doesn't eat it too early!

This Week...  You thought the first week was great...!

Date
September 2nd - 6th, 2013
Reading
We will continue to read many back to school stories this week.  Our author study will begin with Lois Ehlert's  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Writing
We are going to practice writing our name.  There will be a new sign-in sheet added to our morning routine!
Social Studies
This is the week that we will discover our hopes and dreams for Kindergarten.  What do we want to learn more than anything and how we will accomplish these dreams? Each year is different.  The children will be creating their  "Promises" which are basically the same as our class rules. I will send home a copy of our promises for you and your child to sign - just like a contract.  Because the children create these promises, it gives them ownership over our class.  It helps them respect the classroom environment in ways that I could never come up with on my own!
Math
What is a mathematician?  We discover our math tubs.  We learn how to use our math materials appropriately and we will learn all about the calendar this week!
Science We will go in the garden with Mrs. Denham, our garden coordinator to check on the seeds that we planted last week.  Hopefully, we will have some sprouts!  We will also learn how to water our garden plot!  Always fun!

The first week of school was absolutely amazing!  We read a wonderful story entitled Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan.  We all can leave invisible "heartprints" over each other's head that encourage love and positive growth. This will lead beautifully into our community service project at the Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte.  We learned a new song from Ms. Donna, our amazing music teacher, about the core values at Woodlawn.  We presented our song to the lower and middle school kids last Friday. Hopefully you heard all about it! We ended the week with popsicles and a welcome new students ceremony. Lots of fun was had especially with our Upper School "buddies"!  The seniors and the kindergarten kids have a special place at Woodlawn - being that we are the youngest and they are the oldest. This week, we will get to know them and write our hopes and dreams together.

Our goals for the first two weeks of school are:

1. We will learn each others' names and be able to name some interests and out-of-school activities or experiences for each member of our class.

2.  We will all learn the basic expectations for and will successfully perform basic routines during the school day - with close teacher supervision!

3.  We will name and share our hopes and dreams for the school year.

4.  We will generate ideas and procedures for using basic tools and materials for reading, math, art, science, social studies, recess, and writing and will explore their use further in open-ended activity times.

5.  Each child will present his/her work to the group at least 2 or 3 times.  Please know that shy children will be encouraged but not forced to share.

6.  Children's art, writing, and personal artifacts will be displayed around the room.

Please know that the first two weeks of school is a time to help children see their school as a place where they belong and where they know and can meet expectations.  They need to feel comfortable and supported, excited and challenged.  New songs are learned, new friendships are made and the air of our class will hold their voices that will in turn offer hope and fresh ideas!  What an exciting and powerful time! I am so excited to be a part of their journey!
