This is the week where we all become parents!  Our chickens will hopefully hatch between Wednesday and Friday.  This is a very eggs-citing time but  also know it can be a sad one.  Not every chicken will survive the birthing process.  This is the culmination to our life cycle that we have been studying.  Privately without sharing this with our children, our upper and middle school science teachers will use the chicken fetus' that do not hatch to conduct their own experiments.  All of Woodlawn will benefit from our chicken project. They are good about keeping it a secret too.

We will continue to use our chickens to learn all about writing, math, science and social studies.  This hands on learning is one that your child will hopefully always remember.

Thank you again for making my 29th birthday an extra special one!  hee-hee!  I hope you all enjoyed the week off from school and are ready for the home stretch.  These next 6 weeks go by so very fast.  Try to enjoy every minute because it will be over it a blink!

We are using RazKids in the classroom to help teach reading strategies.  It is really important that your child is reading a minimum of 3 stories each week.  I choose stories that your child has read to further their learning of phonics, inferencing, applications, grammar, etc.  So, it's really important that your child is reading RazKids at their current reading ability.  If your child is behind, be sure to help them catch up.

Writing

We will study the letter Mm this week.

Our chant:

Marshmallow, Marshmallow

m-m-m

(rub tummy while you make the sound)

Have you heard about Marvelous Me?  Be sure to ask your child! This week we will study Colin Cerminara!

We have also been studying punctuation.  Our favorite so far is the exclamation point!  We are learning as readers that these punctuation marks help us read out loud the author's purpose.  It's fun!  Try it at home!

Social Studies

We will wrap up our study of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Math

We will continue our study of the greater than, less than and equal to symbols.  Also, we will begin studying numeral 11-20.

Science We will first discover over the next week, the many homes that animals have.  We will compare these homes to our own.  We will also discover how animals survive the winter months. Our long term goal is to study the life cycle of a bee.  Do you know any bee keepers? Or do you have any books about bees?  Please let us borrow them for the semester!

Important Information:

*  Tuesday, January 27th - We are going to the Children's Theater to see Kevin Henkes' Lilly and the Purple Plastic Purse.  We are all set for drivers.  Thanks!

This Week.Happy New Year! 2015!

Date
January 12th-16th, 2015
Reading

This month we will really grow as readers.  I will be teaching your child many strategies to help them become more fluent and enjoy the independence of being able to read a book all by themselves!  Everyone has signed into Raz Kids.  I have received a ton of great feedback.  Remember that your child should read at least 3 different stories and get 3 checkmarks for each.  So far, that has not been a problem! I'm thrilled with the progress your child is making!  Keep up the great work.

Writing

We will study the letter Kk this week.

kicking kangaroo

kicking kangaroo

k-k-k (kick legs out to the side - Karefully!) :)

Have you heard about Marvelous Me?  Be sure to ask your child! We will be starting this wonderful project this week!

We are studying the short vowels.  We will practice hearing the sounds of CVC words. That means consonant-vowel-consonant words.  In centers, we will search for picture cards that have these CVC patterns.  Your child will need to write the correct spelling for each word.

An at home idea?  Go over the short vowel sounds with your child.  We will be focusing on these skills over the next few weeks.

Social Studies

This week we will be running an experiment based on Martin Luther King Jr's dream. Some children will be discriminated against.  Please know that we are only "acting" but your child might be very sad after this lesson.  My hope is that you all have wonderful conversations at home about the work of MLK and racism even today.  It's a very powerful lesson.  There are usually lots of tears.  But I hope it's something that is life changing for your child.

Math

We will practice how to read and recognize number words.  Also, we are going to learn about the greater than and less than symbol.  The chompy mouth always gobbles up the larger number.  The kids really enjoy making their own chompy mouths out of popsicle sticks to use in centers. We were able review our numeral formation studies.  Your child should be able to write the numerals 0-9 without any errors.

Science We will first discover over the next 2 weeks, the many homes that animals have.  We will compare these homes to our own.  We will also discover how animals survive the winter months. Our long term goal is to study the life cycle of a bee.  Do you know any bee keepers? Or do you have any books about bees?  Please let us borrow them for the semester!

Welcome back ADARA!  We were so happy to get a visit from Adara last week!  She will be back at school with us on Monday.  Her parents came this past Thursday and read us a story, Talking Diabetes to School by Kim Gosselin.  This was a great simple story about the things that are happening to Adara, like why she needs insulin and her sugar checked.  We learned that there is NOTHING Adara can't do!  Her parents are going to continue to help us learn more about this disease over the next few weeks.  Thank you for holding them close to your heart as they go through this life changing event.  I'm always so amazed at the outpouring of kindness and generosity from our amazing school.  How lucky we are to be a part of such a supportive community!  I treasure it every day!

Parade of Books

On Friday, October 31st, your child will get to dress up as their favorite character from a book! This book can be one that you have read together not necessarily a book that they can read on their own.  Some examples:  The pig from Olivia, or Jack from The Magic Treehouse series. Please NO movie or TV characters.  Woody, Superman, and the princesses are wonderful characters but NOT what I am looking for.  Please don't feel that the costume should be elaborate.  Just simple pig ears will do!

I would like your child to choose their book and bring it  to school as soon as possible.  The book will remain in class until the Parade. Be sure to put your name on the inside of the book just in case it gets mixed in with the others.  I will inspect their choice and give them the OK to begin creating their costume.  I must approve all books first. Costumes need to be created at home. We will be studying the chosen book and creating a project in class.  That’s why it is important that your child have excellent knowledge about the story. The Parade will begin at 8:30.  Please park your car and walk your child in.  Parents are encouraged to attend the festivities!  Afterwards, we will have a light yet yummy snack!  Your child will need a change of clothes for the rest of the day (sneakers too!).

Happy Reading!

Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons.
This is a subtraction story.  We will continue developing our number sense by learning how to mentally take things away.

Science We are still exploring our 5 senses!  We had a blast in the garden last week with our 6th grade buddies.  We are discovering that we use our senses for just about everything we experience!

Date
September 15th - 19th, 2014
Reading
We are going to introduce all sorts of books about the farm.  These will include books about farm equipment, animals, produce, etc.  We will begin with Apples for Everyone and An Apple's Life.  Both of these are National Geographic books for kids.  The pictures are wonderful!  We will also begin reading about the 4 seasons in honor of the autumnal equinox which happens next Monday!
Writing

How do people write?  When did writing begin?  How should we sit and hold the pencil?  Is it okay to write words we don't know how to spell - YES!  We will continue to explore the writing process.  The most important thing that we can do for our children is encourage them to write - WITHOUT worrying about spelling, grammar or proper phonics.  We want to take the fear out of writing.  Once they realize that mistakes are not only expected but ENCOURAGED, the spelling, the grammar and the phonics can be taught.  Please support me with this at home!

Social Studies
Why do we need to work together as a community?  We will go over the promises and contracts that you all have signed.  We will read The Apple Pie Tree. This story takes us around the world to show us where ingredients for an apple pie come from.
Math

Our author study continues with Chicka Chicka 1,2,3  We'll learn more position words like right and left, etc.  We'll continue to learn the proper formation of numerals. We'll also explore many math concepts using apples for the next 2 weeks.

Science We plan on using our 5 senses to continue our exploration of the coconut.  Also, this week we will be working with our 6th grade buddies in the garden to see how we can use our 5 senses there too!

This Week...  You thought the first week was great...!

Date
September 2nd - 5th, 2014
Reading
We will continue to read many back to school stories this week.  Our author study will begin with Lois Ehlert's  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Writing
We are going to practice writing our name.  Children begin their writing journey using all capital letters.  We will begin to explore how to write our name with only the first letter capitalized.
Social Studies
This is the week that we will discover our hopes and dreams for Kindergarten.  What do we want to learn more than anything and how we will accomplish these dreams? Each year is different.  The children will be creating their  "Promises" which are basically the same as our class rules. I will send home a copy of our promises for you and your child to sign - just like a contract.  Because the children create these promises, it gives them ownership over our class.  It helps them respect the classroom environment in ways that I could never come up with on my own!
Math
What is a mathematician?  We discover our math tubs.  We learn how to use our math materials appropriately and we will learn all about the calendar this week!
Science We will go in the garden with Mrs. Denham, our garden coordinator to check on the pumpkin seeds that we planted in June.  Hopefully, we will have some sprouts!  We will also learn how to water our garden plot!  Always fun!

The first week of school was absolutely amazing!  We read a wonderful story entitled Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan.  We all can leave invisible "heartprints" over each other's head that encourage love and positive growth. This will lead beautifully into our community service project at the Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte.  We learned a new song from Ms. Donna, our amazing music teacher, about the core values at Woodlawn.  We presented our song to the Woodlawn community last Friday. Hopefully you heard all about it! We ended the week with popsicles and a welcome new students ceremony. Lots of fun was had especially with our Upper School "buddies"!  The seniors and the kindergarten kids have a special place at Woodlawn - being that we are the youngest and they are the oldest. This week, we will get to know them and write our hopes and dreams together.

Important information:

We are so excited to get our year started.  Hopefully all of you have had a chance to meet and get to know each other.  We will become a close family over the school year.  Remember that Monday, August 25th is the first day of school and you get to attend with your child!  How awesome is that?  Plan to arrive around 8:15 and stay with us until around 11:30.  We will play games, have a snack, create some art and generally have a super time together.

Our goals for the first two weeks of school are:

1. We will learn each others' names and be able to name some interests and out-of-school activities or experiences for each member of our class.

2.  We will all learn the basic expectations for and will successfully perform basic routines during the school day - with close teacher supervision!

3.  We will name and share our hopes and dreams for the school year.

4.  We will generate ideas and procedures for using basic tools and materials for reading, math, art, science, social studies, recess, and writing and will explore their use further in open-ended activity times.

5.  Each child will present his/her work to the group at least 2 or 3 times.  Please know that shy children will be encouraged but not forced to share.

6.  Children's art, writing, and personal artifacts will be displayed around the room.

Please know that the first two weeks of school is a time to help children see their school as a place where they belong and where they know and can meet expectations.  They need to feel comfortable and supported, excited and challenged.  New songs are learned, new friendships are made and the air of our class will hold their voices that will in turn offer hope and fresh ideas!  What an exciting and powerful time! I am so excited to be a part of their journey!

See you Monday!

Ms. Grennan
