Recommended Computers for Students

Woodlawn does not have an official "laptop" program - instead, we provide a set of laptops that teachers can use in their classes when needed. These laptops are a mix of Apple Macintosh iBooks and MacBooks. Students are allowed to bring their own laptops to school, as long as they contain a wireless ("wi-fi" or 802.11) network interface.

Many times families ask us to recommend a specific laptop for a student - this is what we currently advise:

  • Apple MacBook with 13-inch display
  • Microsoft Office for the Mac - Student Edition
  • a case to keep the laptop from getting damaged

These laptops are very lightweight and durable. They come with 1 GB of RAM (memory) which is plenty for student use, and with the latest version of the Mac operating system (OS X 10.5 "Leopard"). They also come with a built-in iSight camera and free software including iChat, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, and Safari (web browser).

There is an Apple store in South Park Mall and also an Apple store online; however, we recommend shopping online at sites like amazon.com or macmall.com - they often feature rebates and/or free shipping on these products.
