Technical Theatre is a survey as well as a production course. The survey portion of the semester is divided between exploration of the history of stagecraft, techniques of scenic design, stage construction and effects, costume and makeup design,  lighting and sound, basic theory and practice of stage combat. Activities include understanding stage architecture and planning sets by constructing scale models, introduction to basic tools/supplies for set construction, as well as lighting instruments/board operation. We take class off-campus on occasion to see some of these topics in practice. The production aspect of the course involves putting our skills into practice by designing, constructing, and running sets for the middle and upper school plays.

Class Page Course Guidelines

Meets Fine Arts Requirement

Instructor:  Jeff Donnelly

Film Criticism introduces students to the study of cinema, examining the language, techniques, and impact of the medium in regards to the past, present, and future. Students engage in discussions of film theory and production, economical and social aspects of the film industry, and background on the conditions under which films were made. Films that will be screened span the history of world cinema, and therefore vary in subject matter, genre, and style. The course includes a substantial critical writing element.

ECO ART

Class Page

Meets Fine Arts Requirement

Instructor:  Jackie Royce

To continue with Woodlawn’s ‘Go Green’ philosophy, upper school art is going to be creating works of art using materials that will not harm, but help the environment. We will use only recycled materials and make environmentally friendly paints and glue. We will begin the trimester by making our own sketchbooks.  We will do this by reusing old books. We will also do a series of projects that are mindful of both aesthetics and our footprint on the earth. We are looking forward to examining fine art in a different light, in which we reuse and recycle instead of consuming and wasting.

KARMA YOGA

Meets Healthy Living Requirement

Yoga Instructor: Elizabeth O’Connell

The path of Karma yoga is most frequently described as the path of selfless service. It can be compared to community service through the practice of Yoga, a way of "giving back to others."  In this elective, we will have the opportunity to learn and to share what we learn to others. We will learn the basic Yoga poses as well as custom Yoga poses that will enhance each individual's need. Every class will be action packed, and will also end with a meditation/or final relaxation. This will be a great class for students who play sports or that have sports related injuries. We will learn healthy ways to deal with every day stresses, and techniques to help with focus and concentration.  We will "give back" by sharing poses and sequences that we learn to others from our school and other schools in the area. There will also be an optional opportunity to share with our community, and be in an online video for YOGAVIBES.COM available all over the world.

*No experience needed, and no judgment on one’s ability.  Only positive attitudes required!  You will need to purchase a Yoga Mat and Yoga Block (about $20 – found at Walmart, Target, & Barnes and Noble)

DANCE

Meets Either Fine Arts or Healthy Living Requirement

CLASS PAGE

Instructor:  Beth Helfrich

"If you can walk, you can dance." - Zimbabwean proverb

This course will take you through a variety of styles ranging from contemporary to hip-hop!  Learn more about how your body moves and what it can do.  Each class will involve some technical training and some choreography.  We'll look at the work of famous choreographers, learn some famous step sequences (Michael Jackson, anyone?), and finish the course with a site-specific performance that moves all over Woodlawn's campus.  *No experience needed.
